The Downside of Anger

A strong emotion that is accompanied by arousal of the nervous system, anger produces effects throughout the body. But if you express it, you're not necessarily better off.

People have trouble managing anger and other negative emotions. Anger is often one of the few emotions men consider it "acceptable" to display. But that doesn't mean they respond well when someone else displays anger towards them.

Be cautious.

There are situations in which expressing your anger holds danger. Having a jealous or abusive partner is one. Vent to a friend instead of the person who wronged you; you may wind up with some solutions you never imagined.

The enslaved people had a powerful imagination that was captivated by the notion of having a king who was powerful enough that absolutely no one could “hinder” him. If Jesus could not be hindered, then they felt agency in their own lives as well, giving them hope. Some versions of this life-affirming song add, “He is the King of Kings, He is the Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ, the First and Last, no man hinders me”! This song captures the aspiration of the hearts of enslaved peoples.
