We’ve divided the book of Exodus into 2 sections in dealing with Children of Israel:
1. The Redemption from Egypt: chp.1-18:27
1. The Redemption from Egypt: chp.1-18:27
2. The Revelation from God: chp.19-40
2. The Revelation from God: chp.19-40
In Chapter 1 - Israel began to multiply within the nation of Egypt.
Pharoah saw that, and he began to afflict Israel
In addition to that, Pharoah implemented his plan of extinction and ordered every son to be casted into the river.
In Chapter 2 - Moses is saved from Pharaoh’s plan of extinction, He is Redeemed from Murder.
Then Moses tries to Redeem by Murder - He murders an Egyptian to save an Israelite.
And because of Pharaoh’s affliction we see that Israel begins to call upon God and as a result.
In Chapter 3 - God calls upon Moses.
Not because He needs Moses but because in His sovereignty He wants to use Moses to accomplish His Will.
The Preparation for Foundation -
The Realization of God’s Manifestation -
The Commission for the Mission -

Now that brings us to Ch. 4 where we pick up where we left off in the middle of this dialogue between Moses & God.
If your taking notes there are 4 things to look at in chp. 4:
The Objections of Moses Vs. 1-17
The Obedience of Moses Vs. 18-23
The Failure of Moses Vs. 24-26
The Signs by Moses Vs. 27-31
1. The Objections of Moses Vs. 1-17
1. The Objections of Moses Vs. 1-17
Kind of interesting in Heb.11:23-29 quite a bit is mentioned about Moses being a Man of Faith…
But in that passage nothing is mentioned about him going back to Egypt to deliver the Israelites…
Clearly he had a Lapse of Faith… not trusting the Lord… not believing the Lord…
But what a beautiful picture this is of the Longsuffering of God…
If I were God I would have said, OK Moses your out… You had your chance and you blew it…
APPLICATION: Aren’t you glad God is so longsuffering… so patient… he puts up with us time & time again…
And what a great example that is for us in dealing with others… because we can very impatient with others, amen?
1 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,
2. The Obedience of Moses Vs. 18-23
2. The Obedience of Moses Vs. 18-23
The Lord repeats his promise to Moses… talks about the 10th and final plague, death of the 1st born…
And Moses packs up his family and heads to Egypt… being Obedient to the calling of the Lord…
APPLICATION: Like Moses, we have a choice to make in life… to be obedient to the Lord… or not… one problem we often have is try to be obedient in the flesh, in our own power & strength…
We need to rely upon God’s Grace to enable us to be obedient… Rom.1:5…
Interesting the Lord mentions in vs.21 that God will Harden Pharaoh’s Heart….
In fact in Rom.9:18 He hardens whom He wills… this disturbs many people…
18 Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens.
However, the Sovereignty of God does not negate the Free Will of Man… The Bible teaches both…
In Ex.8:15 Pharaoh hardened his own heart… kabad: honor, glorify, honorable…
15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and did not heed them, as the Lord had said.
In Ex.9:12 the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart… kaw-zak: strengthen, make firm, confirm…
12 But the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh; and he did not heed them, just as the Lord had spoken to Moses.
So the Lord confirmed the decision that Pharaoh had already made…
3. The Failure by Moses Vs. 24-26
3. The Failure by Moses Vs. 24-26
For whatever reason Moses failed to circumcise his son as prescribed by Abraham in, Gen.17:…
maybe it was the 80 years living apart from God’s people… 40 in Egypt… 40 in Midian…
So God was going to kill him… Zipporah intervenes and circumcises their son… no doubt something she didn’t want to do… And she calls Moses a husband of blood because of it…
Interesting, because before Moses could be Used by God… he needed to do the Word of God…
APPLICATION: I think it’s important that we do the Word of God… we do what the Bible says to do - Not what we think or feel…
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;
24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
4. The Signs by Moses Vs. 27-31
4. The Signs by Moses Vs. 27-31
Moses did all that God commanded… the people believed Moses just as God said they would..
18 Then they will heed your voice; and you shall come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt; and you shall say to him, ‘The Lord God of the Hebrews has met with us; and now, please, let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.’
And they bowed their heads and worshipped the Lord…
After 400 + years of pain, suffering & affliction there is light at the end of the tunnel… its almost over…
APPLICATION: So they Worshipped the Lord… its easy to worship the Lord at the end of a trail, amen?
But what about at the beginning of a trial or during the trial…
Worshipping the Lord is what life’s all about… we’re created to worship Him… in spite of what we’re going through…
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!
