What do you value most in life?
Pretty simple question, most people will say family, health, friends, and some would even go so far as to say their faith.
To begin to understand this we can look at Jesus’s words in Matthew 6:19-21
V. 19
Here we seen Jesus’s command to not store up worldly treasures, because they will fade. Clothes will be destroyed, and wealth can disappear in an instant.
So what exactly is a treasure?
The Sermon on the Mount A. The Commands—6:19–20

A treasure is whatever you value and protect. It may have minimal monetary value. It may be worthless to someone else, but is something you cherish and delight in.

If we live with the point of view the world gives us, we will spend our lives chasing materialistic gain.
We will be caught up with worry about money and the stuff we have, when in the end of the day that stuff won’t fulfill us here, and wont come with us when we leave.
V.20
Instead focus your attention on heavenly treasures, things that will go with you in the next life.
Souls won to Christ
Obedience to God’s commands
Holy character
These treasures are greater as they provide a greater fulfillment for the person, but they also carry eternal significance as they are works done for God.
V.21
We store up treasures in heaven, because whatever it is your treasuring, that is truly where your heart is.
V.22-23
A further example, is Jesus’s words here
That which you have your eye or heart set on will determine the health of the body.
If you are focused on heaven, then the body is healthy, but if we turn our attention and devotion to the world, then we will be filled with poison and disappointment.
V.24
It boils down to this truth, you cannot serve two masters, either Christ is Lord or He is not
Discussion Questions:
What are some worldly treasures? What makes them tempting?
