2 Timothy 2:14-19, 22-26

-The whole Bible is the story of Jesus
If you’re new to it, start in the new testament. (The Gospels)
Find people to go through God’s word together with
Pray as you read it
If you’ve been studying the bible a long time, then “keep reading it. pray through and ask God to renew your love for his word.”
pray through the hard seasons when it feels dry.
God’s love for us isn’t determined by how we “feel” that day.
Who loves football?
2 Timothy 2:14–19 NIV
Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”
2 Timothy 2:22–26 NIV
Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
Studying Gods’ word requires diligence.
2 Timothy 2:14-15 NKJV
Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to [a]strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
This word diligence comes from the Greek word meletao which means to practice , cultivate or conspire .
If you want to be great at something, spend alot of time doing that “one thing”
My Dad, was 5’8 and played college basketball. He could tomahawk dunk it and that was not the most impressive thing about his basketball skills. One of the most impressive things about his skill was his ability to shoot free-throws. He once made 160 free-throws in a row at practice one day. How? Well, when he was a kid he would spend hours upon hours shooting basketball.
If you want to become a pro at something implement the 10,000 hour rule.
As Gladwell mentions, it takes 10,000 hours of intensive practice to achieve mastery of complex skills and materials.
If you want to be firm in God’s word, then spend time in it.

2. Stay Grounded through the shaky culture
2 Timothy 2:16–19 NKJV
But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
Our culture can’t decide what is truth. Our culture can’t decide what is right and what is wrong.
Culture changes, but God’s word never changes .
John 1:1 NIV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Consistent. The Gospel is consistent throughout history. It doesn’t matter which era. It is the same yesterday, today and forever.
3. Use God’s word to influence others.
Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
before you can influence others with the word of God, you must first be influenced by the Word of God.
Before i teach a class at shelton i have to study the material. If i don’t I am ill prepared to teach them.
