There’s things about modern day teaching on 2nd coming that bother me. Biggest thing: you can get consumed very easily…charts, graphs, timelines, world events •I’ve seen people get so consumed that they stop sharing Gospel, become lethargic in faith, complacent. stop serving, stop giving. Sounds like what Devil would want us to do more than what Jesus would want for us.
1. Jesus said: Do business till I come.
Luke 19:11–27 ESV As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
-J is about to go to cross. They think its all wrapping up right away, they don’t realize he’s going to cross -He’s going to tell them you have a job to do until I return!
12 He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. 13 Calling ten of his servants,
-Servants rep believers
he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ 14 But his citizens
-Citizens rep unbelievers
hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15 When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. 16 The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ 17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ 18 And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ 20 Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ 22 He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ 24 And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ 26 ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 27 But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”
•Believers & Unbelievers will be judged. Until Jesus comes back we have a job to be all about •What bothers me most about confusion, ideas about 2nd coming & current world events…it tends to pull people away from mission!
JESUS CHANGES LIVES! DO YOU BELIEVE THAT?
•Life change happens in a relationship with Jesus! •Believe it? THEN TELL SOMEBODY!
We are found people who find people! We are addicted to life change. Jesus said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” Followers fish. Period. We are passionate about seeing one life changed at a time.
•We have got to get back to witnessing, giving, serving, loving, preaching truth.
2. Jesus said: Don’t lose focus.
Matthew 24:3–14; 36 ESV As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
•Jesus goes through all of this, pointing to the end, & basically every generation has had all of those signs. & at end Jesus says let me tell you when the end comes. Its when the gospel has been preached to entire world. •Don’t get sidetracked from the main thing, sharing the gospel! •People have argued about end times for centuries til they’re blue in face •People argue about timing & order of 2nd coming all time
-Guy asked me “Are you pre trib, mid trib, post trib? Millenial, realized millennial?” -He wanted to know if we could be friends or not.
Another: identifying antichrist. For past 150 years, every gen has identified antichrist. Mussolini, hitler, Henry Kissinger, Prince Charles, presidents (maybe some are close!) •Dates that have been set: guy wrote book 88 reasons Jesus coming back in 1988. Next year same guy wrote book 89 reasons Jesus is coming back in 1989. I guess Jesus messed up! Missed it!
-Listen even if one of these people actually gets date right…Jesus is def going to change it! Lol
•We can def know season, when we’re close…but Jesus said:
v.36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.
•What cx’s have done is sat around, dabbled in speculative word of prophecy rather than written word in Bible. Then, make enemies of fam of God •As body of Christ, bride, family…we must be unified in the big stuff, not make small stuff into big stuff, and clarify which is which through scripture. Should have unity in essentials. Liberty in non-essentials & in ALL things, charity! •We are to edify the body of Christ in the non-essentials & build bridges when it comes to peripheral doctrinal matters such as eschatological interpretations! •Essentials would be authority of Bible, trinity, Jesus, H.S., sin, atonement…NON-essentials would be church & worship styles, alcohol, predestination, political parties, listening to Kanye, dressing up for halloween! •But instead of understanding this, Cx’s demonize each other, & especially when it comes to end times in name of “being right” based on things they are 50% certain of at best if being honest & spend so much time on it that they miss the mission!
EX: this going to shock some of you…
(I tested this w/ several people in last 2 weeks) I asked people “tell me what you believe about end times” they would say “RAPTURE” I would say “tell me why u believe that” no answer… 2 facts western cx’s don’t know: 1. Rapture is relatively new teaching.
•The last 150 years…biggest teaching in western civ is “dispensationalism” view of rapture, Jesus takes believers up by coming in secret, non believers are here for tribulation, then Jesus comes a 3rd time. Taught by left behind books.
-Doesn’t show up until about 1830 with guy named John Darby. Then it was eventually included in popular study bible. -When 1st started being taught theologians were going “2 comings of Jesus?” Jesus is coming again, then coming again again. Not in bible anywhere. Always be careful when something being taught does not jive w/ orthodox cx teaching
2. Rapture is only taught by English speaking, western cx’s
Talk to believer in China, Morocco, Russia, Germany, Africa, Iraq show them your chart of rapture, they’ll look at u like Dwayne Johnson the rock (eyebrow up)
Listen: we do not base end times theology, our eschatology (or anything we believe) on anyones perception of end times. We base theology on the BIBLE. Bible is our truth! We choose to find our truth & anchor our lives in God’s Word, the Bible. We believe the Bible is the authoritative, supernatural revelation of God Himself!
•People get more excited about all of these theories & ideas that honestly have so many holes in them if we are looking at the Bible & don’t care much about what Jesus said to DO…be all about his business, his kingdom! Jesus never said “go study 2nd coming, claim u have figured it out!” •enemy will do everything he can to distract u from doing the 1, only thing that will bring Jesus back…preach Gospel to entire world!
Christians do not agree on every detail of what will occur in the final events of this world’s history. Some of these events and their order of occurrence have simply not been made clear in the Bible. What is important is that all Christians hold in common that Christ will ultimately return bodily, visibly, and gloriously to reign and rule with His resurrected and transformed saints forever and ever.
My eschatological view: JESUS IS COMING.
•That’s it…here’s a little more—only going to give u facts that are not disputed, that we are certain of
Point 3: 21 Indisputable Facts of Jesus’ Second Coming
-don’t worry, I can totally do this in the hour I have left -NO BLANKS. Just hit QR code, u will have them all in notes
1. The Lord Himself will come again. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 ESV For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God.
2. Jesus will receive us. John 14:3 ESV And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
3. We will meet Him in the air. 1 Thessalonians 4:17 ESV Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
4. He will minister to those who’s faith is alive. Luke 12:37 ESV Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.
•When Jesus comes back we have marriage supper of the lamb. Remember at last supper before going to cross J said to disciples “I won’t eat of bread or drink of vine, until we do it in kingdom!” At last supper it says Jesus put on robe, washed their feet, “girded himself”. Amazing! How cool is that? He had a very personal, one on one encounter w/ each disciple. Somehow we will have a very personal, one on one encounter w/ him
5. He will return to the earth. Acts 1:11 ESV This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
6. He will return to the Mount of Olives. Zechariah 14:4 ESV On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east…
7. He will return in flaming fire. 2 Thessalonians 1:7–8 NLT God will provide rest for you who are being persecuted and also for us when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven. He will come with his mighty angels, in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don’t know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus.
8. He will come with power and great glory. Matthew 24:30 ESV …they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
9. He will stand on the earth. Job 19:25 ESV For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.
10. He will destroy the Antichrist.
•We don’t know who that is yet. We all have ideas, I have ideas. I have had a few ideas that didn’t pan out.
2 Thessalonians 2:8 ESV …the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.
11. He will sit on the throne of His glory. Matthew 25:31 ESV When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
12. He will be given the throne of David. Luke 1:32 ESV He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David…
13. He will be given all nations of the earth. Psalm 2:8 ESV Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.
14. He will gather all nations and judge them. Matthew 25:32 ESV Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
15. He will reign on the earth. Jeremiah 23:5 ESV “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
16. He will be given the kingdoms of this world. Revelation 11:15 ESV “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”
17. He will be given dominion. Daniel 7:14 ESV And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
18. All who are in the graves will hear His voice. John 5:28 ESV Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice
19. Every eye will see Him. Revelation 1:7 ESV Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him…
20. Every knee will bow. Isaiah 45:22–23 ESV “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.’; (Phil is quoting Is 45) Philippians 2:9–11 ESV Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Last, most important…
21. We can speed up second coming. 2 Peter 3:12 ESV waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God
•Greek word for hastening “speudo” (not speedo. Bible does not support men wearing speedos) speudo in greek is where we get word speed. Means to hurry something up. •Cx’s will say “come soon Jesus” we don’t just have to say it, we can actually speed it up by sharing the gospel!
Matthew 24:13–14 ESV But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
•Jesus said “do business until I come” Jesus said there’s ONE THING you need to know: gospel will be preached to end of world
Believers: What is the Holy Spirit saying to us when you study second coming closely?
•That as we wait & watch in hope for the coming of our Lord, we work to speed up His coming. We focus on main thing. MISSION. It matters.
Salvation:
In Luke 19 some said “we will not have him reign over us.” God has given us free will. U get to decide. Its ur choice. U can choose to allow lord to reign in ur life or not
If ur not sure when u die you’ll go to heaven, its time to be sure. We want to help u take step today to trust Christ
