Intro:
I want you to contemplate something for me as we talk about Jesus praying today. I want you to think to your prayers, what is it that you pray for? Is it the same thing that Jesus prayed for? Prayer is one of the most misunderstood disciplines of discipleship, but hopefully John can clear it up for you as we begin in John 17:1 where he says:
John 17:1 NIV
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.
Pray
Jesus prayers centered on the Father always. Sure He prayed for the disciples and prayed for the sick and lame, but it was always centered on the Father, “so they will know!” Just like where Jesus begins here in John.

Glorify

John 17:1–2 NIV
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
A. What is Jesus Glory
1. Doing what He said
a. All the things He has proclaimed in the past
b. All is coming to fruition
2. Doing what was prophesied
a. From the Old Testament
i. So the Scripture would be fulfilled
b. God ordained it
3. Going to the cross
a. Doesn’t sound very glorious
b. But it frees us from sin
B. Being True
John 17:3–5 NIV
Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
1. Defining Eternal Life
a. Found in His glory
i. Remember its His death
b. Doing God’s will is God’s glory played out
i. Can be so in us as well
2. Revealed the Truth
John 17:6–8 NIV
“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
a. He is the Word
John 1:1 NIV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
b. Stayed true to this calling
c. Gave word and truth to the disciples so they would believe
C. Born out of love
John 17:9–10 NIV
I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.
1. Those you have given me
a. Talking specifically about those who love him
b. At the time of the prayer, it is the disciples
2. Ownership
John 17:11–12 NIV
I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
a. Takes possession of us
b. That means we are His and the Fathers
c. They have concern and love for us beyond mere acquaintance
d. He guarded and protected us out of His word and His love.
3. Joy
John 17:13 NIV
“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.
a. His love us enough to offer joy
b. To the fullest, because it is His joy He offers us

Secure

John 17:14–15 NIV
I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.
A. From Evil
1. Remain
a. The work is here
b. Our destination is eternity
c. Work done in the World has eternal consequences
2. Came to save the World
a. Even though they hate Him
b. They just need to know Him
Remember a guy in the service. For the most party I hated working with this guy. But once I got to know him and took the time, I found out why he was the way he was. People don’t understand Jesus, they have preconceptions, just like then. So they hate Him because they think they know HIm but don’t.
B. Sanctified in Truth
John 17:16–19 NIV
They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
1. Sanctified
a. Means being made holy
b. Set in righteous difference as compared to the world
2. Done by Jesus
a. The Word
b. What He has spoken to them
3. Same is happening with us
a. When we spend time in the Word
b. It sanctifies our lives

Unity

John 17:20–23 NIV
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
A. One
1. United
a. Probably the greatest message to the Church
b. He was talking to the disciples urging them to remain as one
i. Through the power of the Holy Spirit
c. Those who will believe in me
i. Great danger to the Church is division
Romans 16:17 NIV
I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.
ii. I have seen it with my own eyes
d. Unity defeats the Devil’s intentions
1 Corinthians 1:10 NIV
I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.
Psalm 133:1 NIV
How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!
John 17:23 NASB95
I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.
C. Eternal
John 17:24 NIV
“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.
1. Be where He is
a. Dwelling with the Father
b. That is the ultimate glory for which we seek
c. This has been the plan all along
2 Ultimate Goal is Love
John 17:25–26 NIV
“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
a. By Knowing the Father through the Son
i. Jesus reveals God’s character
ii. He reveals His love
b. We can know that love
c. Show the world that love
i. By loving each other first
ii. Then by loving them
iii. This is the training grounds for love
Conclusion:
I love the things that Jesus prays for and He always anchors everything in the Father. Whether it is thanksgivings, supplications or requests it is always centered in the Father and His will. It is always about growing the kingdom and getting the Church to see the Father better. That is the number 1 priority of all prayers is God, the triune and powerful, the almighty. When we remember this, as Jesus did here, we remember His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
