Lord of Peace
Summary of the letter.
Current state of Thessalonian church and the unrest all around them.
Some commentators believe this has nothing to do with the unrest within the church.
However, Paul’s instructions to bear with, warn, have patience, seem to indicate that the lack of peace may even be within the body of believers.
Two things concern the Thessalonian church - 1. unrest about the end times.
2. persecution
What does a kicker/quarterback have to do? Find peace in the midst of a chaotic situation.
Where is it?
What is peace?
Freedom from quarrels especially in the absence of war.
Earlier in Eph. 2 we are told we are children of wrath, enemies of God.
at least 10x in the NT we are told He is the God of peace.
Usually in Paul’s benedictions or greetings
How does His being the God of peace affect you?
Gospel!
And then...
It is what He wants for His people
Paul wants this for them as well, we know this because he is asking for it and writing to them in the Lord so that they may have peace.
His “distinguishing mark”
unmerited favor and kindness
If by nature children of wrath, made to have peace with God through Jesus, then whenever God crushes His enemies you will be under the grace of Jesus and not under the wrath of God
