Peter is writing to the elect exiles.
Directly applies to us, for we are elect exiles in this world.

Hope is the key.
Not hope like this world has, and anxious desire for something to happen.
Christian hope is a confident anticipation for what we know God will do.
It is called hope becasue we have yet to see it, but we know it’s real.

Our hope is in something that is tangible.
This is a stark contrast to the hope that the world has. For their hope is delusive, vain, and perishing.
Job 27:8
8 For what is the hope of the godless when God cuts him off, when God takes away his life?
Our hope is alive because it is in the one who is alive!
Hebrews 6:19-20
19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain,
20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
Jesus is the sure steadfast anchor for our soul.

Our hope being in Jesus Christ, who was raised from the dead.
1 Corinthians 15:20
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
He has been raised.
The firstfruits referencing how we too shall rise.
This is why we have a living hope!
For Jesus is alive, knowing that He is alive, we know that we too shall rise.
The resurrection is proof that we have the inheritance that Peter is speaking of.
The resurrection is what gives us confidence to continue on as exiles, no matter what this world, or our enemy the devil might throw our way. We have confident expectation of resurrection and eternal life.

When we speak of the sovereignty of God, this is what we mean.
There is no power on earth that turn or restrain the hand of the Lord from accomplishing what He desires.

This living hope that we trust in; it isn’t becasue you were such a great person that you figured it out. It isn’t that you fell into it by happenstance.
By God’s power, He has caused you to be born again.
John 1:13
13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
You were born according to the will of God.
James 1:18
18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Of God’s own will He brought you forward.

Not only has God brought us to Himself in accordance with His will…but He is the one who preserves our faith.
For God’s power is guarding or sustaining our faith for salvation.
Our faith that we continue to have is the proof of the sustaining power of God in our lives.
Because we continue to trust God when it’s hard, that is the evidence of God continuing to work in us.
2 Thessalonians 3:3
3 But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
God continues to guard us against the evil one.
2 Timothy 1:12
12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.
God is able to guard, to keep us until that day. The day of His return or our death.

I notice the huge buildup before Peter gets to various trials.
Why? You must know the power of God first.
All things that happen, God allows.
You must know the preservation of God.
That He has promised that He will guard you.
This doesn’t mean you won’t suffer, it means God will be with you through it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
Paul gives comfort, others have suffered, God preserved them.
He will do the same for you.
So that you may endure it, this isn’t saying He will remove it; but be with you while you endure it.
There are teachings that God wants you to be happy.
As if happiness is the goal.
If you don’t have an excess of money, you aren’t a person of faith.
If you are suffering, you don’t have enough faith.
That teaching is dangerous, and it is a lie of Satan from the pit of hell.
God allows trials, to test your faith. To refine your faith.

Coins were made of precious metal. Dokimion was the process of testing the coins to make sure that they were pure gold or silver, and weren’t cut with a type of alloy making them less value.
Peter is saying that the trials are your dokimion. They are the process that God is using to test you. To prove that your faith in Him is genuine.
Not becasue He doesn’t know.
But so that we can see the imperfections, the less valuable things of this world that are mixed in our lives and dulling our faith.
This is why Peter makes the reference to gold tested by fire.
Just as they wanted to know that their gold was pure.
Your faith is more precious than gold, you want it to be pure.
What is your reaction to trials in your life?
Do you go into anxiety?
Worrying about what is going to come to pass?
You need to stop focusing on your problem, but on God, who is bringing you through this for your growth.
Do you go into depression?
All that you dwell on are the woe’s of this life.
You must dwell on whatever is honorable, pure, lovely, worthy of praise.
Do you self medicate?
Drugs, alcohol, pornography, work
You need to see God for who He is, how great He is. God needs to become more valuable to you than your sin.
Do you try to build value in your life?
Working extra hours to earn favor.
Doing lots of volunteer work so people hold you in high esteem.
You need to draw near to God, remembering that you are valued in His sight. That is why He gave His Son to be with you.
As you go through trials, you need to know who is your living hope.
That is what will give you strength to persevere.

v.6, 8
We see joy spoken of in verse 6 and verse 8.
This type of joy is an outward expression. So full of joy that you can’t help but sing and dance before God!
In between those two statements of Joy, we see trials.
In our nature we believe trials and joy are opposites.
This is becasue we believe joy comes from pleasure. We usually find pleasure in things that are sinful, against God.
The joy spoken of by Peter is joy that comes from knowing your sins are forgiven, and are being conformed into the image and likeness of Christ.
And yes, He is using the trial to conform you to His image.
This results in an outward expression of joy in singing praises to God for all that He has done, and what He is doing.
You must know:
Your suffering is not in vain.
You have a living hope for something greater than this world.
God is in control
