Matthew 28:18–20 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Introduction

Everyone lives in a place in time.

Kronos- is linear time
++Past
++Present
++Future
John 10:10 NKJV
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
True living is
++not the sum of the time
++the impact upon the time we have

No one person had a greater impact on time than our Lord Jesus Christ.

John 9:4 NKJV
4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.
He show us that
++Our time is limited
++Life was not.
John 3:16 NKJV
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

We can have everlasting life through Jesus Christ

Mark 16:16 NKJV
16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
The Great Commission is
++The call of God
++The quest of the believer
++The hope for the world

The mechanism for discipleship

Four Elements of Discipleship
++Power
++Purpose
++Process
++Product

The Power of Discipleship

Matthew 28:18 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
This is a bold statement designed to anchor the rest of the conversation. This is a typical design of new testament teaching.
Anchor Statements
++The preaching of John the baptist
Matthew 3:2 NKJV
2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
Anchor Statements
The preaching of John the baptist
++The preaching of Jesus
Matthew 4:17 NKJV
17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Anchor Statements
The preaching of John the baptist
The preaching of Jesus
++The teaching of John
1 John 1:5 NKJV
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
Once an anchor statement is made, what follows is a perspective that supports the reality of the anchor statement.
Matthew 28:18 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

All activities we do in discipleship has to be in direct relationship to the Authority of Christ in our life.

To answer the call we must know Jesus

Many have hear about Him
Many have read about Him
Many have experienced what only He can do
John 1:14 NKJV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

To Answer the call we must believe

Genesis 15:6 NKJV
6 And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.
It is so easy for our carnal mind to minimize Him
Mark 16:9–11 NKJV
9 Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.
They did not believe
++They had been with Jesus
Mark 16:12–13 NKJV
12 After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country. 13 And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.
They did not believe
They had been with Jesus
++The rest

Everybody was informed but nobody believed

The Purpose of Discipleship

Matthew 28:19 NKJV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
We are commanded to
++To Go
++To make disciples

A Commandment is built on a Hierarchical Structure

There are two major types of organization structures
++Hierarchical-a clear system of authority
++Relational-Is proper interaction base upon level of influence
The Biblical process is a repeating cycle
++Declaration of relationship
++Becomes Dysfunctional
++Becomes Hierarchical
++Return to Relational
Relational is the goal
Hierarchy is the process

The Process of Discipleship

Matthew 28:19 NKJV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Baptism is an immersive activity

Romans 6:3 NKJV
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

Baptism declares my freedom from the past

Romans 6:4 NKJV
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Baptism affirms my new identity in Christ

2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

The Product of Discipleship

Matthew 28:20 NKJV
20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

The life of the believer is learned through observation

Each generation has a responsibility to pass it on.
Deuteronomy 6:7 NKJV
7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
Discipleship is
++not about curriculum
++not about expert teaching skills
++anchored in the example
1 Timothy 4:12 NKJV
12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
What example are we setting today?
Where do we put our trust?
The World Need Jesus, Now
2 Timothy 3:1–4 NKJV
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
