In Remembrance of Me
In Remembrance of Me
First Introduction:
Good Morning Embrace!
Thank You’s
Communion Sunday Today
23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
Let us Pray
Second Introduction
The human brain is the only object of any kind that can contemplate itself.
The brain only feels pleasure and there are no pain receptors in the brain.
The brain runs on electricity, producing enough power to light a 25 watt bulb.
The brain’s ability to create new connectivity is known to occur throughout life.
The brain is at least half fats.
Your eyeballs are an extension of your brain and are directly connected to it.
The collection of neurons lining the stomach and intestines operates independently to digest food and is sometimes called the second brain.
As wonderful and amazing as our brain is…it is is our nature and tendency to forget. Throughout scripture we see this:
16 They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, With abominations provoked they him to anger. 17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; To gods whom they knew not, To new gods that came newly up, Whom your fathers feared not. 18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, And hast forgotten God that formed thee.
7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgat the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
21 They forgat God their saviour, Which had done great things in Egypt;
32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.
Joseph in the OT was forgotten by the Cupbearer for TWO years after helping him.
Jesus and the Disciples after he feeds the Multitude
13 And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side. 14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. 15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. 16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. 17 And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? 18 Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: And all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all his benefits: 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases; 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; So that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6 The Lord executeth righteousness And judgment for all that are oppressed. 7 He made known his ways unto Moses, His acts unto the children of Israel.
There is a pattern of memorials in the Bible due to the Forgetfulness of Humanity.
Oftentimes clusters of stones were assembled as a memorial to the power of God.
Alters were often constructed and named as a result of God’s miraculous working & provision:
Jesus instructs us to “Do this in Remembrance of Me”…Jesus is central, He is the focus, it is Him who we are not to forget…as a matter of fact the whole of scripture is centered around Jesus and much of what is contained therein point to the most important act that humanity has ever witnessed
I. Abraham & Isaac
I. Abraham & Isaac
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
Take note of that Land of Moriah
Some things happen in this land that are comparative to Jesus:
Isaac & Jesus:
Both born miraculously
Both the Only Son
Both carried the instruments of their Sacrifice
Both Willing Submitted to the Instruction of their Father
It was in the words of Isaac, this questioning, young, perhaps scared youth who spoke on behalf of all mankind when he asked his father,
“Behold the fire, behold the wood”
These feeble instruments at our disposal
This wood, so easily found strewn around the ground
The base attempts of humanity to contribute something meaningful....but it is all meaningless WITHOUT a Sacrifice
There is no:
Atonement without a Sacrifice
Offering without a Sacrifice
Worship without Sacrifice
“Behold the fire, behold the wood…but where is the lamb?!”
We need a Lamb to make this work!
We ask this today:
Where is My:
Peace today God
Where is my Salvation
Where is my Joy
God I’m weak…where is my strength
The fire & the wood…necessary and needful, but not as necessary and needful as the sacrifice, the thing that is offered.
And the response of Abraham in the questioning of his son echos through the pages of this book
God Will Provide Himself a Lamb!
God I don’t see it now…but I trust YOU will provide! And God did provide.
On the surface this test seems odd & perhaps even cruel, but in hindsight it sets the stage for what God will do in providing a lamb…it is a picture, a story of events, to REMIND US of God’s Unfolding Plan of Sacrifice, Redemption, Love.
Abraham Sets up Alter in the Land of Moriah to REMEMBER the great provision of God and Abraham named the Place, “Jehovah-Jireh” which means…the LORD will Provide!
Abraham & Isaac were in the Land of....Moriah.
II. David & His Pride in Numbering
II. David & His Pride in Numbering
Backstory:
David ascends the throne of Israel
Counted as a Man after God’s Own Heart.
Faithful, yet flawed
Enjoyed much success militarily at the hand of God
Yet, He becomes prideful and decides to see how BIG his army is, how strong HIS forces are…forgetting the victories came from God
1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. 3 And Joab answered, The Lord make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
The Pride and Sin of David Displeased God
7 And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.
David had a hand in choosing the repercussions of his actions:
3 Years of Famine
3 Months of Destruction at the hands of your enemies
3 Days of the Sword of Pestilence by the Angel of the Lord
13 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the Lord; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
15 And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the Lord beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the Lord stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
As a result of King David’s actions, 70,000 People Died
David becomes:
Remorseful
Contrite
Sorry
Penitent for the Error of His Ways, for the Sin he has committed.
18 Then the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the Lord in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
This threshingfloor...Ornan Owns it:
It is a place where grain is processed after harvest to become usable
It involves the trodding down of the grain under the weight of oxen. It separates that which is good from that which is easily carried away.
The process of winnowing, or the lifting into the air the crushed grain, allowed the good stuff to fall, and the waste to be carried by the wind.
It is from here that flour is created for the use of Bread, nourishment, sustenance, something to strengthen the body, mind, will.
He tries to give it away to David
24 And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
Beneath the drawn sword of the avenging angel money is given, and land is bought. The solemnity of the transaction is not marred thereby. Yet there was no absolute need for money, since Oman said, “Take it to thee...I give it all.”
David cannot endure to worship at another man’s expense, and he answers “Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price.” That religion which costs a man nothing is usually worth nothing. - CH Spurgeon
David purchases the land, builds an Alter, offers a Sacrifice...
27 And the Lord commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
It was here at this Threshingfloor of Ornan where repentance for wrong and a sacrifice given cause the Judgement of God to Cease!
This place was special, it was significant, and to commemorate what God did a structure was to be built...
1 Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the Lord appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
The very place where Isaac was Offered, God Would Provide
The Temple was Built: It was a place of Atonement for…Sin.
The very reason we are in need of a Savior is because of our sin....
Lord Save Us…why?
Because I want to join a social club that is church?
Because I like the potlucks?
No…Lord Save Us…Because We Perish!
As like with David, our wrong makes us worthy of separation from God, but there is a sacrifice made that puts that Sword of Judgment back in its sheath!
III. Jesus on the Cross
III. Jesus on the Cross
This final meal of Jesus, it was a Specific Meal…it was the Passover Meal
26 And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? 27 That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the Lord’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
This is what was commemorated by Jesus and His disciples. But the meaning of all that we see in the OT…all the reminders God gave become more clear in the Words of Jesus.
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Jesus, went…He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. It was an Olive Garden. Gethsemane means “Oil Press”....it was a Threshingfloor of Sorts for Olives. He was led to Golgotha, or the “Place of the Skull” where He died, triumphantly crushing the head of the serpent as prophesied in Genesis 3. And all of this took place…under the shadow of this place called Mount Moriah.
This perpetual reminder of the provision, mercy, and love of God.
Jesus calls us all now to a new remembrance…namely this Communion that we will partake of Today.
We Remember:
There is nothing I can bring as a lasting Sacrifice…Yet, God Provided for Us
The great cost of our Sin
The great mercy & love of our Savior, who endured the crushing of the Threshingfloor to become our Bread of Life, our Spiritual Nourishment, the essence of our Life.
