Sermon

May start by asking point blank, what someone learned this week about God’s name?
So last week we talked about a name being an icon of a person, giving us a glimpse of who they are and being a place for our memory to go oh yea, i know that person. A representation of the person.
But with God, although Yahweh is that name, God reveals himself in a ton of different names. That tells me one thing: theres a lot to know about God

El Shaddai - God Almighty

Translated into English as “God Almighty”
El means God.
Shaddai means Almighty. (MAYBE LOL)
They believe it roots from the word Shaddu, meaning “mountain.”
Could also mean “God the Overpowerer.”
Appears 40 times in the O.T.
Many are in Job and Genesis.
First time we see it in bible is Genesis 17:1
Genesis 17:1 ESV
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless,
May not read all, just give them this List:
Genesis 17:1–2 ESV
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, 2 that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.”
Genesis 28:3 ESV
3 God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.
Genesis 35:11 ESV
11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.
Genesis 43:14 ESV
14 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”
Genesis 48:3–4 ESV
3 And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and said to me, ‘Behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will make of you a company of peoples and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession.’
These Genesis occurrences always involve God announcing himself as EL SHADDAI in light of Him fulfilling His promises to the person and providing some “fruitfulness to their walk/life.”
The words I keep reading as I research are that God Almighty acts in spite of our “inadequacies”
That is good news!
Because our inadequacy a lot of time is being able to follow God perfectly.
Theres always a promise to make the person “fruitful.”
Philippians 1:6 ESV
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
El Shaddai is the one powerful enough to mold ME into what He wants me to be.
So the thing i keep thinking in my head, is:
A. Do i see a need for El Shaddai in my life?
2. Am i living by the power of El Shaddai in my life?
3. How is God making me fruitful?
4. Am I praying for that?

Jehovah Jireh

Jehovah Jireh means the Lord will provide
Theres one specific story that i think of in the bible and that happens to be the first time we see God show himself by this name.
What do you think that story is?
(God provides a ram sacrifice for Abraham and Isaac Gene)
Its actually Elohim will provide in Genesis 22:8 not Jehovah. But then it is Jehovah in 22:14. It is also in verse 11, the angel is called an angel of Yahweh.
Does anyone remember something from last week that says thats a problem?
Read Exodus 6:3
Exodus 6:3 ESV
3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them.
So is Ex. 6:3 a contridiction?
My presup says NO!!!’
Its pretty clear that the context of ex 6:3 is that God hadnt shown the patriarchs whatever he is showing Moses. They didnt know God as that god.
There is also a messy history lesson of pre-Israellite religious groups following a god call yhwh. It was hard for me to tell whats what due to agenda to disprove the bible as “words of God,” but seems like theres truth there that the name was around.
And that fits with Bible testimony too because God never was soley the God of Israel, talking to many people groups in extra-bibilical activity.
So WHAT DOES IT MEAN? LOLOL. NO CLUE.
God revealed his personal nature in some ways to Moses that were totally different than Abraham, the father of the covenant.” That is a mystery.
Tell the story of Genesis 22, use Landon if it seems appropriate (he is ok with it, i have wood and knife for drama)
So what are we taking from tonight?
Lets hear from a student on God as Jehovah Jireh.
May get volunteers, but also will use Kye Webb.
The ALL POWERFUL GOD of the universe declares that he will take care of his people and provide everything they need. He guarantees this by His name.
If he doesnt, than his name is a liar and he is a liar.
Are you his people?
What are some ways you need him to provide?
Is it a need or want?
Will you be faithful to ask?
