1 John 2:28-29
1 John 2:28–29 NASB95
Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.
1 John 3:1-10
1 John 3:1–10 NASB95
See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin. No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him. Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous; the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.
So I want to talk about abiding in His I want to talk about not shrinking away from his coming
How many times do you think Abide is found in the Bible
182 Times
Abide in Him or Abide in you 77 times
its in 44 books out of 66 books of the bible from Genesis to 2 John
Id say its pretty important
Abide- accept or act in accordance with (a rule, To live with in
In Hebrew it means To dwell as a completely dependent alien in anothers home
in Greek To live in to remain TO CONTINUE
Lets Start with the Hebrew as its the oldest form of this word Going back to Adam
To dwell as a Completely dependent Alien in another’s home
Completely dependent
Abide in me and I will Abide in you
When we abide in the Father we are like a stranger in God’s House completely dependent on Him on His kindness on His generosity
you ever crash at someones house maybe you lost your job maybe you had split up from a bad relationship maybe you are a 40 year old addicted to video games and never moved out of moms house
It is when you are the most vulnerable
You either make yourself useful
help where needed or find yourself out on the street with the dogs you are completly dependant on them to have a place to rest a couch to sleep on a place to eat wash clothes to take a hot shower
What happens to that guy that feels as though he is entitled as though he is not dependant
He eats all the groceries doesnt help with food or clean up after himself
Leave dirty clothes every where
his attitude is not one of thankfulness not of dependence but of entitledness
how do you think that relationship is?
How do you think that relationship will turn out?
Isnt that how some of you have been treating God?
Not as the loving Father who took you in and fed you gave you rest forgave your worst sin only to have you entilted to want more
If so how do you think your relationship with him really is
would that be a proper relationship?
consider his word in John
John 15:1–12 (NASB95)
“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. “My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love. “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
whats jesus point well there is 2 his reason is so that My joy may be i n you that it may be made full
So here Jesus is telling you the same thing we are learning back here you want you joy to over flow your cup Abide in me Live in me rest in me depend on me you cant do it with out me so stay here and let me take care of you
Now have you ever taken care of someone who didnt want help, they needed he;l but they didnt really want it , you can be like that with God too he wont force you if you dont want to abide in him he wont make you
1. So to Abide in Him we live in him in a constant state of dependency
lets look at the Greek Abide- To live in, to remain, TO CONTINUE
To Live within
do you live in the church house?
no you go to church
Do you live in your house
Yes you live in your house
Whats the difference in the church house and your house
If you looked at what is listened to what is watched what is said how things are said
Does your house look like the church house or does it look like the worlds house
you see this building is just that a building a place where fellow believers come together to fellowship to praise God to honor God to study Gods holy word but you dont live in the church house
Now he says abide in me
now in the greek it means to live within
now you dont obviously live within the church house right
so checking that box every sunday or for some every sinday saying I did my good deed for the week now what will god do for me next week
People it doesn't works that way
you see your house must be his house more so than the church house it should be filled with prayers it should be filled with reading His holy word it should be filled with songs that glorify him thats what it is to live with in Him
even your car becomes a place of worship
what you listen to what you talk about its all for the Glory of Him
you live within Him that its no longer you who live but he who lives within you
To Remain In
To remain in Him sometimes that's a hard one
usually this comes from trials
Remember the soils
The parable of the soils describes what becomes of seed that is sown in four different types of soil. The first type of soil is the hardened soil of the pathway. This seed does not penetrate the soil at all, but is quickly snatched up by the birds of the air. The second type of soil is the rocky soil, a shallow layer of earth, barely covering
to rock below. The seed which falls upon this type of soil quickly germinates, aided by the warmth retained by the rock, but hindered by a lack of depth and by a lack of moisture. The seed which germinates quickly also terminates quickly. The third soil is the thorny soil, a soil populated with thorns. The seed falling into this soil germinates and begins to grow, but is eventually crowded out by the hardier thorns. The fourth soil is the fruitful soil, that soil which produces a bountiful crop. Having told the story, Jesus put an exclamation point after it by adding these words: “He who has ears to hear, let him hear”
The soil that was rocky
Quickly sprung up full of hope only to wither away
Jesus said its like the one who receives the word with joy but trials come and he turns away Remember those that went out from us they were never truly of us
Then there is the thorny soil
A third group also responds with joy, and even begins to make changes and progress in their lives based on what they heard, but the cares and pleasures of this world lure them away from the truths of the kingdom and they leave it behind (Matthew 13:22).
The pleasures of the world the worries of the world are so strong they keep their eye on these things and not jesus
To Abide is to Remain in Him the forth soil
The fourth and final group hear the truths, respond to them, and continue in them, resulting in a great harvest (Matthew 13:23
Matthew 13:23 NASB95
“And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.”
He who endures to the end will be saved
2. So To abide in Him we must remain in Him
To continue
Now in the surface to continue and to remain may seem the same tomato tomato right but there is a slight difference
Remain a Noun
Continue a verb
to continue To proceed with doing an activity; to prolong an activity.
To remain That which is left; relic; remainder.
So earlier we looked at remaining in Him
especially in trials
That when all is over you are found in Him not on the out side, that the distractions the worries the heartaches of this world do not draw you from Him but instead you last you remain in Him
Now to continue is a action this is a part of remaining for no one could remain if they did not continue
I dont know how many times trials have come into my life and for a moment i thought Ill just throw my hands up in the air go home lock my self up run to the mountains get away from people
If I did that one im not continuing in Him and i will not remain in Him
to continue to to keep pursing God no matter what you see or don't see to keep doing His will no matter how good or bad it is you continue
to press forward this is the continue this reminds me of Pauls message
Philippians 3:12–21 NASB95
Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you; however, let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained. Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things. For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.
3. So we must Continue
Abide according to Webster 1995- accept or act in accordance with (a rule, To live with in it
To accept or act in accordance with a rule
So part of Abiding is to surrender to the will of God to His ways His rules His house right
Not complaining not grumbling but accepting and to live within it
How many people heard growing up as long as you live in under my roof you will follow my rules
Thats what this is saying you want to abide in Gods house
You want a place in His house
You want a taste of heaven then you got to surrender to His ways
Because His ways are far above your ways
lets go outside for a minuite
come on everybody up if you cant get up we will be back in just a minuite
if you can get up lets go for a walk I got to show you something
You got to see this
One day i noticed this and it completly changed the way I saw Gods ways so come one everybody up lets go out side
dont worry we will be right back in a few minutes
