For those of you who have siblings, one of you has probably asked the question, “who’s the favorite?”
Could you imagine if your parents answered with a name??
Favoritism is sin
Favoritism is treating someone differently because of what they can provide.
Ex.
James in rich and poor man.
When you favor someone, you are going against God.
What does favoritism look like in your life?
Treating the kid with more friends better than the one who has less?
Being nicer to the cute girl/guy
Whatever it is, it’s actually sin.
Appearance doesn’t matter
We always like to talk about how appearances don’t matter, but we don’t seem to actually believe in it.
Rich people are treated better
The attractive get more opportunities
You still try to present yourself as “great” around your friends.
It doesn’t matter what you look like, in God’s eyes, you are His child
Appearance, wealth, and popularity are meaningless!
It can actually be more damaging that you think!
v. 6-7
Matt.
19:24 ““Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.””
wealth can make you jaded, and can push you further from God.
Now, we’ve discussed favoritism and judging in your personal life, but what about in the church?
The Church should be a place of acceptance.
The church is a place where all should be welcome, where it’s ok to not be ok!
The youth group, as long as our leaders are here, is going to be a place where there’s no favoritism, where we treat eachother lovingly, and where there’s no threshold for acceptance
You don’t have to be cool enough to get in this youth group, you don’t have to “fit in,” you have to be here and we will love you!
Jesus didn’t die for the people who had it all figured out.
He died for the poor, the dorks, the nerds, the unpopular, and the broken.
When we care about appearances and show favor to people, we are doing the opposite of Christ.
Matt.
11:28 ““Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”
He didn’t die for the one’s who felt like everything was working out.
Questions

Does this mean that those who are rich cannot be saved?
Why do you think so?
