This is the end.
Jesus is hitting the disciples with a lot, and they are confused and worried.
Jesus shares with them that a helper is coming, but who it is??
The disciples are confused and unsure.
John 16:5–15 NASB95
5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

v. 5-6

John 16:5–6 NASB95
5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
The Disciples focus.
What happens when you lose attention of what happens because you are worried or concerned about another matter?
(example: sports, short memory)
The disciples are so upset about the information that Jesus has given them, that they can not see a pass what may or may not happen to them.
sorrow has fulled there heart.

v. 7

John 16:7 NASB95
7 “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
Jesus tells them that it is good from Him to go away, because in Him going away the Helper (Holy spirit) is coming.
Jesus again promises that the Holy Spirit is coming
the Holy Spirit has Life- giving power (7:37-39) and indwelling presence (14:16,17) and a teaching ministry (14:26)

v.8-9

John 16:8–9 NASB95
8 “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;
The Holy Spirit will not only lead us to Christ, but He will convict of sin and righteousness.
convict - meaning expose, examine carefully
The Holy Spirit is for conviction not condemnation, conviction of the need of a savior.
The Holy Spirit convict of sin and for not knowing Christ.
The only reason that a person goes to hell is because they dont have Jesus as Lord and Savior.
can we go to heaven any other way?
Thoughts......

v.10-11

John 16:10–11 NASB95
10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
Righteousness - The Holy Spirit will bring righteousness. Jesus leaving does not mean that rightousness will be at a loss.
judgement - the world is under the control of Satan, there will be judgement. in fact satan has already been judge.

v. 12

John 16:12 NASB95
12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
Jesus understands there frustration, and would like to tell them more, but they are not ready for that.

v.13-15

John 16:13–14 NASB95
13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 “He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.
The Holy Spirit will guide you in all truth.
this truth is from God.
The Holy Spirit’s truth is the same as Son and Father.
It’s not a situation were you will have different truths
Its all from the same source. God.
Christ will be glorified because His truth is given to us.
The story of the game “telephone”

v.15

John 16:15 NASB95
15 “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.
There is no division in the Godhead.

v.16-18

John 16:16–18 NASB95
16 “A little while, and you will no longer see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me.” 17 Some of His disciples then said to one another, “What is this thing He is telling us, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I go to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.”
Jesus tells of the future.
In a little while they will not see Him, (this brings trouble)
But again in a little while they will see Him
This can seem confusing to the disciples.
The disciples are clearly confused
Some our suggest that the disciples wanted to ask Jesus question but didn’t.
Jesus is talking about his death,

v. 19-20

John 16:19–20 NASB95
19 Jesus knew that they wished to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 “Truly, truly, I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy.
Jesus again is telling us about His soon death and resurrection.
Makes you think, none of this has happen before.
Jesus is telling them that He will leave them, but will return.
Jesus says to them, There grief will turn into joy,
The grief of the believers if pain of being in this world.
While this is happening the world will rejoice,
in the death of Jesus the world will rejoice, and disciples will lament.
but in the death of Jesus will bring salvation. This will bring joy to the believers, and lament in those who are not in Him.

What does this say about us now?

Jesus knows what’s in our heart, He is aware of the things that we contemplating.

v.21-22

John 16:21–22 NASB95
21 “Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world. 22 “Therefore you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.
Jesus explains that this pain and joy will be like.
The Joy of salvation is real, for all of us who are in Christ will have joy, but will will have a life of pain and lament.
