HOMOSEXUALISM
Romans 1:27
“And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet” (Romans 1:27).
The Bible had plenty to say about the vile practice of homosexual conduct. And not once does it condone it. Always the Bible severely condemns homosexualism. This condemnation of homosexualism shows up early in the Bible in the destruction of Sodom and ever since homosexualism has been also called ‘sodomy’ after the name of the city that was destroyed which had a prominent practice of homosexualism in the city. Our text really condemns homosexualism. It speaks of its vile character of also of some of its consequences.
FIRST—THE CHARACTER OF HOMOSEXUALISM
Our text lists at least three features of homosexual conduct and none of the three are good and profitable. They all condemn homosexual conduct as evil from top to bottom. There is absolutely nothing good about homosexualism
• It is a deviate conduct. “Leaving the natural use … error.” Homosexual conduct is not normal. God did not intend for men to engage in such conduct. The ‘natural’ sex act is between a man and women and the two are made physically for the sex act. Homosexualism is a deviation from the normal. Homosexuals are truly ‘deviates,’ the word translated “error” means to deviate from the norm.
• It is dishonorable conduct. “Unseemly” The word translated “unseemly” means to be shameful. Homosexual conduct is indeed shameful conduct. It is a disgraceful, dishonorable deed.
• It is decontrolled conduct. “Burned in their lust.” The meaning of these words is that the lust is out of control. It is therefore not a legitimate appetite but one that is out of control.
SECOND—THE CONSEQUENCE OF HOMOSEXUALISM
Judgment comes upon homosexuals. God sees to that. From the destruction of Sodom to AIDS, homosexualism brings destruction.
• The predictableness of the consequences. “Recompense” The word “recompense” means homosexuals will be judged according to their deed. Their judgment is predictable. That is, it is certain. They will not escape God’s wrath upon the deed.
• The place of the consequences. “Themselves.” This refers to judgment coming upon the homosexuals. Physically and mentally they will pay a high price for their foul activity. Today we see the physical judgment especially in AIDS though you do not hear much about that on the news. Mentally homosexuals have guilt complexes and mental problems with which their vile practice curses them.
• The properness of the consequences. “Meet” This word says the judgment upon homosexuals for their vile conduct will be fair, just, and equal to their sin. That is not a good prospect for homosexuals.
