Intro and Tension
Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Series about Religning who Jesus is | He is WORTHY | 4 weeks |
Forgiveness | Something we are told by God to DO | Something that we recieve | Today, forgiving the most difficult person = Yourself. How do you forgive yourself when you know you’ve done something bad | Hard because we know ourselves.
For me, when I let someone down if I have committed | Small lapse in integrity, eats me up, when I can’t fix something. I know Jesus has forgiven me, but I can’t forgive myself.
For you? Something years ago | Drinking | Got caught in a desperate situation made a decision | Poured into work, forgot about family | Odd spot in your marriage, did something | Clicking, know you shouldn’t be looking, but can’t stop going back,
And you are ridden with Guilt, Covered in it, What do you do when what you did haunts you and you just wear it as who you are.
Title: How to heal, from the guilt you feel
My Hope: What you have, the identity you have built around the guilt you feel, today, you will be released from it
**Prayer**
What we need to undersatnd - Not all guilt Created Equal | False Guilt | Guilty for something not your fault > Parents divorced, think it’s your fault > Someoen took advantage, victim feels shame “I must of done something wrong” - It was not your fault
>Superman
Don’t buy into the devils game of wearing guilt - It’s false guilt.
My False Guilt - Friend Died - Didn’t catch up for Dinner with Him Weights on me.
False guilt is dangeours, not productive, not from God. Not all Guilt is created equal.
Point 1: False Guilt is not yours to wear.
Another type of Guilt - Gift - Draws you to God
For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
Godly Grief - Conviction | Put you onto the right way | Change Behaviour | Live in freedom | Express love | Heal from Past.
Godly Guilt - helpful because it takes you off broad path, puts you on narrow path.
Good Example - Peter - Great Qualities, Does stupid things on Steriods | Who can relate to Peter
Peter “I’ll never let you down” - Peter was the guy “I got your back”’
Jesus: “Calm down homie” - Puts ego in check, tells him, you will deny me. Peter: Me? No...
Fast Forward - Jesus gets captured, girl asks him, woman asks him, 3rd time -
And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”
And he went out and wept bitterly.
Can’t believe what I did. I am so so sorry! - Ever felt like that? Middle of BEST intentions:: “Never do it again” moment of weakness BAM “How can God love someone like me?” - Outcast.
May not be something you did - False guilt someone else did - Some mess that you spilt, and it is in THIS MOMENT - Listen - The Devil Sees you - Dwelling in your guilt, and he takes your guilt - and gives you an identity (Cape), in Shame.
Shame = Devils Playground.
Guilt: I Did Something Bad
Shame: I am Bad
Satan says “You’ll never measure up” - “pain is payment for past” - the moment, you start dwelling in shame, the enemy has you, exactly where he wants you.
Peter - You started Bragging, then fell short, good one mate - and to top it off - JESUS SAW YOU DO IT - Everyone is going to know, Ashamed - never minister again - should be ASHAMED - of yourself.
Shame - Devils Playground.
Powerful Story - Old Testament - God’s People in slavery 420 Years- Gew up in Slavery- Identity - Even when Freed - This was going to be tough to break.
Here is the problem - How where you born? In Slavery.
For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
If you call on Christ you have been freed and yet - We attach our actions, to our identity and because of that, we can get in a cycle of Shame Based Thinking.
3 Ways this plays out;
We are vulnerable to perfectionism - cover ourselves in perfect performance
We are critical of ourselves, which drives us to become critical of others - Most critical people, dealing with the most shame - We hate in others, same sin we hate in ourself
We use self-defeating thoughts to shield ourselves from disappointment. - We tend to think worse case scenario - THis is bad, its going to be bad, I can’t do this - we are actually sabotaging.
Shame based thinking - It’s not from God.
We think because we have been pulled out of the mess, we are still THE MESS , and this is a LIE.
You are not your mess - You are a Miracle of God’s grace.
But how do we move from shame based thinking? To Freedom thinking?
We realise the sacrifice,
Not a new problem - Adam and Eve -
And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
This is amazing - Flaunting everything and yet - Where not ashamed.
Sinned - Tried to hide from GOd - Looked Inward - What did God do - Provide a Sacrifice and …COVERED THEM.
What’s the difference between the New Testament and Old testment sacrifice?
Old testament - 5 Main Sacrifices - Burnt | Grain | Peace | Sin | Trespass - Focus on Sin -Mandatory - Had to do it to atone, and cleanse from defilement.
And he killed it, and Moses took the blood, and with his finger put it on the horns of the altar around it and purified the altar and poured out the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it to make atonement for it. And he took all the fat that was on the entrails and the long lobe of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat, and Moses burned them on the altar. But the bull and its skin and its flesh and its dung he burned up with fire outside the camp, as the Lord commanded Moses.
Depending on your class it could be - A young bull, a male goat, a female goat, a dove/pigeon or a 1/10 of ephah of fine flour. Each with different rituals - Each had to be done PERFECTLY.
Now here’s the difference
Cape on (Sin) - Sacrifice - would take the Sin away, until you sinned again (Cape back on). It wasn’t a covering. It was an atonement.
It was a foreshadowing of what was to come | pointed forward - just like the rest of the law does.
These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.
but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,
When Jesus Sacrificed, he created a covenant, that covers - that COVERS.
Covered with white blanket - Did something bad - Covered - Feel some guilt - Covered. Had sex last night out of wedlock - Covered.
Doing something about Godly Grief, is not about rules for salvation, it’s about LIFE. You’re still covered, and when you realise that, you can start to TRUST - To bring it TO HIM.
God wants to use your guilt to draw you to his Grace.
Godly Sorrow - in your conviction - says “I don’t want that anymore, I have a God that cares for me, I have a God who provides mercies to me, who are NEW EVERY SINGLE MORNING- Our God is GOODNESS!!!!
Healthy Guilt - To draw you to his GRACE, to draw you to his MERCY.
Peter = Godly Sorrow - Godly Sorrow Lead to Repentence.
Peter…Wept…Bitterly -
Jesus went on to give his LIFE - Why? forgiveness of our sins. He was not just a goat, not a lamb, not a bull, not a foreshadowing- He was God’s first and only PERFECT SON. HE WAS GOD.
Remember John the baptist
Jesus, would be crufified - Died in our place, world went dark, Ladies came to tomb - Stone was rolled away - The son of God was not there - He was raised from the DEAD.
Jesus then shows up to PETER - Jesus, looks to Peter, we read about it in the Gospel of John
Jesus said - Peter - Do you Love me? Peter; Yes of course.
What Jesus DID NOT SAY - You owe me - You need to wollow in your self pitty - Your going to hell,
Jesus said: Then feed my sheep - In other words - Do my will - Show my love, Finish, your assignment.
Peter Didn’t say: I don’t deserve it, I am RUBBISH.
Peter Recieved it and REPENTED and CHANGED.

I don’t know what guilt you’re holding - Rock analogy - IT gets heavy - It’s not worth carrying - it’s going to way you down.
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
But you can confess it, and it can be forgiven. - He DESPISES WHAT YOU ARE CARRYING. HE DOESN:T WANT YOU TO CARRY IT.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Not for salvation - but for freedom, of, guilt.
Don’t let the PAIN of your past ROB You from your future.
Can’t change your past but let GOD change your future.
Satan, attaches your guilt to identity- He brings up your past, intimidated by Future- Remind yourself, you are not what you did, you are not the shame.
False Guilt, is not yours to wear.
You are not your past. You are not your Sin.
You are who God, says that you are.
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
The Lamb of God was enough. Jesus was the PERFECT SACRIFICE. BRING HIM YOUR GUILT.
Who is Jesus? He is the K o K, L o L, Perfect Lamb, Our Redeemer, Our Saviour, Prince of Peace, The Lion of Judah, The Perect SON OF GOD who DIED for ME and for YOU, He is the only one WORTHY of opening the scroll, and HE is WORTHY of providin you FORGIVENESS.
