Intro: Story of Vaughn
One of my favorite bible studies is a six week study called basic by Francis chan…and there is a scene on the week he talks about teaching in the church were he tells this story: We had this speaker at our church one time who was a missionary out in papa nugunie and he lived in the jungles for twenty years and translated the new testament in their language amazing life, but he talked about how in the end he was so influence by he youth pastor Vaughn, and what is crazy about it is the next week they had another speaker who was telling us to sponsor these kids who were hunger and starving and he explained how he started on this type of life style because of the influence of his youth pastor Vaughn and it was the same guy, and chan remember talking to his friend dan about it..isn’t that weird they both talked about the same guy…and he goes o well I know pastor Vaughn also…seriously?? He was like yea I was in Mexico with Vaughn one time, and they were walking around the dumps in Tijuana and these kids who were so desperate for food or clothing or whatever they just knew to come running to Vaugh because he went there regularly because he would give them clothes and care for them and hug them, people would come to different villages,..they knew he. Was a man of love..Dan said the day I spent with Vaugh felt like as if I was walking with Jesus..wondered if this is what it would feel like….
-Paul tells Timothy to watch his life and doctrine
don’t just pay attention what people are saying but how they live…..See chapter four Paul is telling Timothy to confront false teaching…See they had one way of being Goldy…and so did Paul…..And see that word Gdliness occurs 15 times in NT…Nine are in this epistle alone…
Godliness means reverence, a God centered like ….it means as
-David said I have set the Lord always before me Ps 16:8.
.a God intranced world…that is being transformed by the person of Goldness Jesus 3:16…..But here is the rub….
Some think this godliness is an outside in job….True godliness is not just a transformed mind…but heart….and action…So tow points we need to reject and Nous T
I. We need to reject false godliness (1-5)
Ex: So what were these false teachers saying of how to be Godly?….the text starts that in later times …some will depart to this false Teaching….now later times to the apostle Paul was…..after the accession of Jesus and the sending of the Spirit…when people asked are we in the later times yes…because Paul thought so…it should’t surprise us when we see others depart form the faith……and notice this false teaching is led by deceitful spirits……which influence teaching…and their conscience are seared….ILL: Like a burn that has killed the feeling…they have so hardened there hearts over and over to the truth…they have no care for living a moral life..and receiving the truth….and notice the text says these teachers are liars….they always twist the truth ever so slightly….
-At the root the false teachers were distorting the word of God and deny God’s goodness
…let me show you how they what they were distorting—verse 3 they were saying you need to deny getting married and eating certain foods…..in order for godliness…….They were looking at creation in a negative sense…saying….you still have to work at being right with God…..FT always deny Jesus and exalts self..how by putting the attention on what THEY were doing instead of the sufficiency of the Cross…Jesus sacrifice wasn’t enough so I have to do this…..APP: Now you might think Rem….those example are extreme I don’t deny being married or eat certain foods in order to make myself feel more right…but…legalism…and trying to justify our self before God is so subtle….We fall into this when we think we are in Gods better favor, when our church attendance is better than some, our bible reading is perfect…..listen one prayer I pray is that
Prayer: In Christ there is nothing I can do to make you love me anymore. And nothing I have done to make you love me any less.
…..now this doesn’t trough the spiritual disciple out the window we will get to that…but our faith isn’t in what we do but what Christ has done….and so Paul counter acts…this false teaching by saying….verse 4-5….that God created marriage and food…and it is to be enjoyed….With Thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer…now this last verse made holy by the word and prayer isn’t some weird hocus-pocus where you take a slice a pizza and shake a bible over it prayer over it and its holy…no he is saying all the things that these people have been denying have been made holy by Gods word..he says there good BY receiving them in the right way….with a heart of gratitude and thankfulness…See some think when you become a Christian you just have to be miserable…you should feel bad for enjoying anything in creation…its’ weird….others think well I want to enjoy the earth to be happy so can’t be a Christian so I live for everything in this world…
-The key is understand our desire for joy and our desire for God are not at odds they are linked
you are not given up joy in life when you become a christen your gaining it…how because now the things of this world, moneys, food, sex, marriage, clothing, a cool house…..are not the end in themselves…if you make the the end of your joy..they will kill you…but you enjoy these things with thankfiving in your heart!……..knowing they ultimately point you to the redeemer..Jesus isn’t a cosmic kill joy…Piper…Sexual relations in marriage are not worship…but may become worship, smelling toast and bacon early in the Morning is not worship, but may become feeling fall breeze on the skin and fall sunshine on the face and fall colors in the eyes, and fall fragrance in the nose are not worship but they may become worship, tasting and enjoying the pleasure of this world is not worshiping or honoring or loving or supremely treasuring God but may become that…..Grace and thanksgiving in all things…..cause if you don’t do it small things…you will grow hard
ILL:You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the play and the opera, And grace before the concert and pantomime, And grace before I open a book, And grace before sketching, painting, Swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing; And grace before I dip the pen in the ink.16
Chesterton’s point is that God is to be praised for everything he has created……APP: How thankful are you for the little things?…Start seeing them as opportunity for praise and worship! You want to become Gloly by your outside actions…You will complete miss it..….Golness is a transform of the heart…which Leeds to the next point…
II. We need the nourishment of true godliness (6-16)
EX: Paul shifts now and says well don’t fall off the ditch in thinking then that godliness comes with no effort from me at all….key verse hear is he says verse 7b…Rather train yourself for godliness, for while boldly training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way….……See he says…listen an Olympic marathon athletes isn’t going to the donut shop, every morning, and always skipping his training regiment…why? because he will tank at the end….Same with the young Timothy and us as followers…
We don’t just fall into Godliness…so surrounding this key verse is I believe a diet and discipline plane for nourishment in goliness …ILL: sanctification (growing in godliness, chrilsiness) is like digestion..you connect yourself to the means of nutrition..God does the digestion for you..when you eat something you mindful chew..but then it goes down into your digestive system and it starts to pull the nutrition out of it..that what God does in your spiritual life…he pull the nutrition out of them and port them into you….See…their is a difference in training, striving, and toiling for godliness based off fear that God will love you and earning that love (that’s what the false teacher were doing)…and then Training for Godliness because you realize what God has done for you THROUGH Christ and will countuine to do..and out of love, and desire for him you pursue godliness….…..
Ways we nourish godliness.
#1 Taking in the right food ( 6-7, 11,13, 15)
…if you put these things (the teaching of the goodness of God and the word) before the brothers your a good servant…being trained in the words of the faith and good doctrine that you have followed…..verse 7 Have nothing to do with irrelevant silly myths…….so lets start with with diet…their is junk food…of silly myths..He is saying once again their is false doctrine out there….we can get wrapped up in all kinds of intake on news, social media, browsing the interring and running down rabbit trails that aren’t clear in scripture…avoid the junk food…but Train in the word…the word trained greek root for receiving food to be nourished……Timothy says Noursh in the word and sound doctrine….and he doesn’t just say it here…but in verse 11 command and teach these things….and verse 13..devote yourself to the public reading of scriptures, to exhortation to teaching…practice these things immerse yourself in them….He essentially tells Timothy…Why we do what we do at Grace….why do we reading scripture each week…Rem why do you open the Bible and go through it…because this is our nourishment…this is what the early church did…open the word….read and teach….not just showing you what is there….but exhortation…why you should follow it!! He empheis church..
#2 By being commit to the Church (v. 13)
…See what we do hear on Sunday….is open this book show you who Jesus is….so good…is like taking a fresh orange squeezing it out…with a juicer….and drinking down….a class of gospel juice…our hope…but…what if you don’t drink again until next Sunday??…in real life…you would’t be nourshiend you would starve…..family…that’s why Paul is urging Timothy nourish in what you have learned….feed day in and day out on the word..APP:…..please if you don’t know how are where to start please ask me….dive into it with someone here….and listen Paul tells Timothy verse 15 you have to practice these thing (teaching the word)..so that all may see your progress..….I love that gave me hope this week as a young pastor..and that’s what Paul tell Timohty in verse 12…don’t worry that you are young…..but set the example….now….don’t wait to say…o when I have read the Bible and I am a Christian for along time..no…let the word nourish you and change your speech, conduct, purity now…..not perfection but progress..it’s slow….
#3 Using our gifts (v. 14)
.don’t neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council for elders…..We are all called to serve…God has given each on of us gifts…Timothy Calls the church a household family…one big body with many parts…APP: .what has God made you passionate about doing and serving…come talk more about this in later text…but talk with me now too….
Con:
Final way we are nourished
#4 Rest in the same power that saved us in to start with = the gospel.
…see godliness is not….
God saved me now I have to work…..verse 10 For to this we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the savior of all people especially of those who believe..now this is not God will save all people…but all those no matter their national background all kinds of people….Who put faith in Jesus……and the text said we have our hope…..on the living God who is doing this…….See when you understand godliness isn’t about you….but God saved you…..transformed you out….you then in delight in God God will countune to do it…and you do as Paul told Timothy in verse 16…you keep a watch on your life and doctrine and perstit in him…proving you are truly in Him…and others look on and think who do you know!…..
See the beautiful thing about godliness is you no you are growning in it when it doesn’t become about you…that’s what makes Vaughn so great….people were not attracted to Vaugh but WHO Vaugh knew and was being nourished in Christ his only hope in life and death…that wasn’t just transforming his thoughts….but his heart and hands…..his doctrine and life.
