7 Miracles of Jesus

John writes at the conclusion of his book the purpose of his book.
John 20:30–31 NASB95
Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
First of all John lets us know that the purpose of his writing is not meant to be a biography of Jesus life. He indicates this by saying that not all the signs Jesus performed are included in his writings. He further explains in chapter 21 that even if he were to write a biography of Jesus life that all the signs Jesus did could not be recorded. So the reason that he the book was to demonstrate the signs that Jesus did do so you would believe that Jesus is the Christ and that you would have eternal life.
John records the following 7 signs of Jesus

Water into wine

John 2:9–11 NASB95
When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
Jesus first miracle recorded by John was to turn the water into wine. The wedding party ran out of wine and would have been shamed and potentially litigated for running out of wine. It was the family of the groom that was suppose to provide enough wine for the wedding party.
They ran out and Jesus turned six stone waterpots of water into wine. He removed the shame of the family by providing that which was necessary to preserve their family respect.
This is what Jesus did for us on the cross. He removed our shame of sin by atoning for it through His sacrifice.
As a result of Jesus sign His glory was manifested and his disciples believed. His glory was manifested in that no one else had ever turned water into wine. He is the only one who could and did. It is the same way with our salvation. He is the only one who could offer himself and did. As a result the disciples believed. You too can believe.

Healing of Royal Officials Son

John 4:46–54 NASB95
Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.” The royal official said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off. As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living. So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives”; and he himself believed and his whole household. This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
Jesus is approached by a royal official because his son is about to die from sickness. Jesus spoke and the sickness left the boy and he was healed. As a result the whole household believed in Jesus.
All of us have a sickness. It is called sin. It leads to death. Jesus removes our sickness and gives us life. He restores our spirit and allows us to walk spiritually healthy.

Healing the Lame Man

John 5:6–9 NASB95
When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.” Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.
Jesus healed a man that had been lame from birth. Jesus demonstrated that healing only comes from faith in Him. This man thought that he had to be put in the pool to get well. Jesus told him to get up and walk. This man had never walked. It would require faith to try to get up and walk.
We too must have faith in Jesus to be made well. This was also a fulfillment of the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah 35:5-6
Isaiah 35:5–6 NASB95
Then the eyes of the blind will be opened And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a deer, And the tongue of the mute will shout for joy. For waters will break forth in the wilderness And streams in the Arabah.

Jesus Power over Nature

Jesus fed 5 thousand men with a few fish and loaves of bread and walked on water. John 6:10-11
John 6:10–11 NASB95
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted.
Jesus showed himself to be the bread of life by feeding the 5000 men. He demonstrated that He is our sustainer.
John 6:18–20 NASB95
The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing. Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened. But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
Jesus defied nature by walking on water. he demonstrated that he has power over nature.
Only God has power over nature> Jesus demonstrated that He is God by walking on water.

Jesus heals blind man

John 9:1–7 NASB95
As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. “While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing.
Jesus did this sign to show that works of God can be demonstrated in a persons life. This man had been blind for over 18 years and had never been cured. When he came to Jesus his sight was restored. Jesus proved himself to be the light of the world.
Jesus gives us sight. The old hymn “Amazing Grace” say “I once was blind, but now I see.” Have you ever thought about what that means? you have to understand John Newtons life to understand. He was a slave tradesman. He recognized the atrocity of his trade and the sinfulness of it and changed his way. he became a proponent of the abolition of slavery.
Jesus does the same with us. He allows us to see the atrocity of our sin and repent of our sin.

Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead

John 11:38–44 NASB95
So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. “I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.” When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.” The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
Jesus demonstrated that he has power over death. Lazarus had been dead 4 days. His body had began to decompose. Jesus restored him and brought life back to his dead body.
Jesus does the same thing for us. All of us will die one day. Some of us will rise from the dead and be given new life in heaven for all eternity. Others will be given a new life to be tormented in the lake of fire forever. All of us will be resurrected. The question is resurrected to what? This leads me to the final and most convincing sign!

Jesus raises from the dead!

John 2:19 NASB95
Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
John 20:26–28 NASB95
After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
Jesus was resurrected from the dead and Thomas put his finger in the nail scarred hands and hand in the spear pierced side of the resurrected Christ. He believed and declared Jesus to be His Lord and God.
Jesus has conquered sin and death and offer eternal life to all that believe in Him.

Life In His Name

Jesus promises life in His Name. What does this mean? It means eternal life! What is eternal life? I believe it is two fold. First it means that you have a pace in heaven where you will spend eternity with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is a place where there is no sin. You are given a new body that does not get tired, sick, or ages. There is no more sadness or sickness. There is joy everlasting. You will be with others who have passed before you that have put their faith in Jesus. There are many other blessings of heaven that cannot be described but will be better than anything we could ever experience on earth.
Secondly, eternal life begins here on earth by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We are given the tools of heaven to display here on earth so that others will know that Jesus is Lord. Galatians 5:22-24
Galatians 5:22–24 NASB95
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
You are given new life today to show that Jesus is your Lord and your God
