Gettinging to same group of people in Asia
1 Peter 1:1 “Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the chosen who are residing temporarily in the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,”
2 Peter 3:1 “Dear friends, this is already the second letter I am writing to you, in both of which I am attempting to stir up your sincere mind by a reminder,”
Time Line of Second Peter
2 Peter is a fair well speech
Time Line
1st Peter written in beautiful Greek.
1 Peter 5:12 “Through Silvanus, the faithful brother (as I consider him), I have written to you briefly to encourage you and to attest that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.”
---------------------------------------
2nd Peter lower level Greek. Why? Peter did not have any help.
Silvanus was unavailable during the writing of 2 Peter as Peter is awaiting his execution.
2 Peter 1:14 “because I know that the removal of my habitation is imminent, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.”
---------------------------------------
2nd Peter possibly sounds more along the line of how Peter really sounded without a scribe.
-------------------------------------
2nd Peter broken up into sections and defined as below for each chapter.
1 - Security and Maturity of the Believers
2 - Deception and infiltration of false teachers
3- Final Judgement
----------------------------------------
1- Secure and Mature Believers.
2 Peter 1:2–7 (LEB)
May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, because his divine power has bestowed on us all things that are necessary for life and godliness, through the knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence of character, through which things he has bestowed on us his precious and very great promises, so that through these you may become sharers of the divine nature after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire,
and for this same reason, and by applying all diligence, supply with your faith excellence of character, and with excellence of character, knowledge, and with knowledge, self-control, and with self-control, patient endurance, and with patient endurance, godliness, and with godliness, brotherly love, and with brotherly love, love.
These appear to be a foundation being built on top of each other.
------------------------------------------------------------------
What is?
Excellence of Character
Philippians 4:8-9 “Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are pleasing, whatever things are commendable, if there is any excellence of character and if anything praiseworthy, think about these things. And the things which you have learned and received and heard about and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”
1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s possession, so that you may proclaim the virtues of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light,”
------------------------------------------------------------------
What is?
knowledge
Philippians 1:9-11 “And this I pray: that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is superior, in order that you may be sincere and blameless in the day of Christ, having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God.”
Philippians 3:8 “More than that, I even consider all things to be loss because of the surpassing greatness of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for the sake of whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and consider them dung, in order that I may gain Christ”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Love is the final capstone being built up for one to truly love he must first be able to do all things on the lower list and in doing so he is able to love. Without the lower understanding my view of Love will be warped.
One teacher said it like this, this is a platform being built up. I will be exhausted doing this. No one falls into Godliness but you fall into mud. Its a completely different experience. You must be diligent and practice over and over until muscle memory kicks in.
We want to develop a biblical world view. This takes effort on our part.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading Peter you get the understanding that he knows Jesus. Its not a weak approach but a secure approach. He is going to his execution and encouraging other believers before his own death.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next verse (Certain Promises)
2 Peter 1:8-10 “For if these things are yours and are increasing, this does not make you useless or unproductive in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the one for whom these things are not present is blind, being nearsighted, having forgotten the cleansing of his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be zealous even more to make your calling and election secure, because if you do these things, you will never ever stumble.”
V8 For the one for whom these things are not present is blind, being nearsighted, having forgotten the cleansing of his former sins.
Peter is building a sense of security in Christ showing the characteristics of godliness being developed in the believer. You will start to have fruit.
What happens if these characteristics are not being developed?
We will wonder if we are truly saved.
Verse 9
1:9 nearsighted … blind. Lit. “blind, being nearsighted.” The combination of terms here is unique, since the two physical conditions are mutually exclusive. Some suggest on the basis of the Greek. word for “nearsighted” that Peter is alluding to the squinting or narrowing of the eyes, and that a deliberate rejection of the truth is in view. However, because the nearsighted person squints in order to see better, it is possible that Peter is simply multiplying related terms for effect. It is clear that the qualities that believers are to reflect are inevitable byproducts of their having been “cleansed from former sins.”
What is a result in knowing our Lord Jesus Christ?
Verse 8
1:8 if these qualities are yours … they keep you from being … unfruitful. The “qualities” of God that they are to reflect are understood to be “fruits” resulting from knowing “our Lord Jesus Christ.” They are the inevitable result of faith, not things added to faith in order to achieve a right standing before God Rom. 3:21–26; James 2:14–26.
How can we know we are elect according to the scriptures?
Verse 10
1:10 confirm your calling and election. While God’s choice of the elect is firm and certain in God 2 Tim. 2:19 the identity of those whom He has chosen from all eternity may not always be obvious to the individual Christian. Assurance of God’s call comes through the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s influence in our lives as it produces good works (Gal. 5:22–24; 1 John 3:10, 14), in conjunction with the internal testimony of the Spirit in our hearts (Rom. 8:16; Gal. 4:6). We grow in our assurance of our election and salvation as we see spiritual fruit in our lives.
Next God given privilege.
2 Peter 1:11-21 “For in this way entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly supplied for you. Therefore I intend to remind you continually concerning these things, although you know them and are established in the truth that you have. But I consider it right, for as long as I am in this habitation, to stir you up by a reminder, because I know that the removal of my habitation is imminent, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.
Question to ponder: When does a person enter the eternal kingdom?
2 Peter 1:15-21 “And I will also make every effort that you are able at any time, after my departure, to recall these things to mind. For we did not make known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ by following ingeniously concocted myths, but by being eyewitnesses of that one’s majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when a voice such as this was brought to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” And we ourselves heard this voice brought from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain, and we possess as more reliable the prophetic word, to which you do well if you pay attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, recognizing this above all, that every prophecy of scripture does not come about from one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”
