UNHOLY MOTIVATIONS
And the king was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.
King Herod had a birthday party that ended on a very sour note.
After the main meal of the party, Herod provided some entertainment which consisted of his step-daughters’ dancing.
Her dancing was very lewd and immoral, and it so excited Herod that he told the girl to ask anything, and he would give it to her.
She counselled with her wicked mother who had left her husband to be married
to her husband brother, Herod.
For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.
Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness.
It’s wickedness.....
He mother said to ask for the head of John the Baptist—he had reproved the marriage and now lay in prison in the dungeon of Herod’s palace.
The request upset Herod (“was exceeding sorry”) but he granted the request.
Why did he grant the request?
There was four motivations that caused him to grant the terrible request for John Baptist’s head.
FIRST—THE MOTIVATION OF EVIL PASSION
“He would not reject her.”
Herod was all heated up with evil immoral passions after the dance.
This motivated him for the evil of that evening that caused the party to end on a sour note.
Herod let his passion rule instead of principle and as a result he ended up with bloody hands and a curse that still is upon him today.
In every town and city we have places today that stir up ones immoral passion, then we wonder why these stirred up folk do such awful deeds.
I am amused at the efforts to stop rape and other forced action against women.
Women dress like whores then complain if they are attacked.
They have provoked the attack and to complain about it is gross hypocrisy.
Fleshly passion is a poor motivating factor in your life.
SECOND—THE MOTIVATION OF EVIL PRIORITIES
“For his oath’s sake.” Herod’s own word had more priority than did God’s holy Word.
He was more concerned about keeping his word than about keeping God’s Word.
As a result he ordered a very bloody and murderous deed to be done.
You will never live a holy life if your word or the word of some other man has priority over God’s Word.
To keep yourself from doing vile evil, God’s Word must have absolute priority in your life.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
THIRD—THE MOTIVATION OF EVIL PEOPLE
“For their sakes.” Here is a class example of a person doing vile evil in order to please people.
Herod was more concerned about pleasing a vile audience than he was about pleasing God.
He was more afraid of ridicule from people than retribution from God.
Herod wanted to be popular more than he wanted to be pure.
FOURTH—THE MOTIVATION OF EVIL PRIDE
In all of this one cannot help but see the pride of Herod. He did not want to lose face or recant his word.
He was too proud to admit he had made a mistake. Pride never helped anyone, contrary to the advocates of self esteem.
When pride rules in your heart, as it did Herod’s heart, it will defile you and destroy you.
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
