Psalm 19
Introduction: Have you ever seen the big dipper? On a nice, beautiful night if you just look up at the stars and study them it’s hard to deny there is a creator.
Gods wonderful design can be seen in everything we see, in all His handy work.
We live in a world where it is go, go, go; but sometimes we need to just observe Gods creation.
When looking at Gods Creation it reminds me of a beautiful Psalm by David.
In Psalm 19 David brings up how the heavens show Gods glory.
First, we will see Creation Declares His Glory (Psalm 19:1-6).
Second, we will see the Law Declares His Glory (Psalm 19:7-11).
Finally, we will see His Protection declares His Glory (Psalm 19:12-14).
Thesis: The world teaches us the world come from nothing; Gods Creation teaches us there is a creator.
I. Creation Declares His Glory (Psalm 19:1-6).
a. The Heavens declare His glory.
i. The Heaven: Being with the planets, Stars, Sun, Moon, And Earth.
ii. 2ndHeaven- Being the Immediate heaven that the birds of the sky fly, with the clouds and sky.
iii. 3rdHeaven- Being the Spiritual Heaven where God and Jesus currently reign. (2 Corinthians 12:2 Paul speaks of the third Heaven).
iv. The first two Heavens can be seen with the eye. They show us a design, therefor there is to be a designer. A design demands a designer.
1. Creation cry’s out there is a creator, yet you will have people say what about the ones deserted on a deserted Island.
2. Rom 1:20 “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.”
b. The firmament sheweth His handy work.
i. Just looking at the beautiful satrs at night: seeing the big dipper, the little dipper, a shooting star, a eclipse you can see Gods beautiful handiwork.
ii. Want to see it even better look through a telescope, and you notice there is more and more out in the universe the more powerful scope you have.
iii. And to know how powerful our God is: He spoke everything into existence in 6 literal 24 hour days seen in Gen 1.
iv. Study just the human body alone and there is without a doubt a designer.
c. The days shew His knowledge.
i. Just knowing the sun rises every morning and sets every evening show there is a designer.
ii. Think about the different season: Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring. Every year we have the seasons. Our sun has been rotating around the earth 365 days a year from the begging of time about 6,000 years ago.
d. Vs 3-4 “There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone through all the earth and words to end of the world.”
i. Gods voice can be heard in the very fact of His design, even if people deny reading the Bible. There is no question there is a God. Gods Handiwork is seen everywhere. People are without excuse!!
e. 4B In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun.
i. The sun is sitting in the galaxy as its home and the earth, planets, and stars rotate around the sun.
f. The sun is referred to as a bridegroom and strong man.
i. The sun is sitting in place like a bridegroom waiting for his bride to walk down the aisle to Him to spend eternity.
ii. Like the strong man to win the race is the sun never stops it rises every morning in the w=east and sets in the west, day by day.
g. Vs 6 there is nothing hiding its heat
i. Nobody in the world does not feel the effects of the sun. Even if you are blind and cannot see it, you can always feel it.
ii. Watch nature come out on a cold morning as the sun rises and the buzzards in trees with wings out and animals roaming in open field to warm up from the sun.
iii. The Sun alone shows the glory of God. The fact of knowing it has been burning for roughly 6000 years and still has energy to burn shows a designer.
iv. Studies have shown if the earth was any further we would freeze to death, and closer we would burn to death. God designed it absolutely perfect. We are with out excuse to deny God.
II. The Law Declares His Glory (Psalm 19:7-11).
a. 6 Term’s------------6 Adjective’s----------6 Effect’s
b. The Law of the Lord----Perfect-------Converting the Soul.
i. Everything we know about God comes from His revelation of the Scriptures.
ii. A Man can know everything he needs to know to be right with God through His law.
iii. While we are under the OT and this would refer to Law of Moses, it’s the same with the Law of Christ we are under today.
iv. Gods law has always had a purpose.
v. And it is perfect! 2 Tim 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
vi. Able to convert the soul.
1. Let’s us know when coming to Evangelism- Heb 4:12. We a lot of times want to tell people what they need to do to be saved. When what we need to be do is point them toward the Scriptures to read for themselves.
c. The Testimony of the Lord---Sure-----Making wise the simple.
i. Testimony- Literally God is the witness. When Jesus was baptized in Matt 3:16-17 He saw Spirit of God descending like a dove. 17 The This is by beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. Matt 17:5 Transfiguration- God says the same thing but adds “Hear ye Him”.
ii. John 1:1,14 Jesus is the Word and God and The Holy Spirt are witnesses.
iii. Sure- The Word of God is sure. You can take it to the bank, everything God has said will be done will be done. The earth will melt with fervent heat. The Son will return in the clouds and all the faithful shall join imHHim.
iv. Making wise the Simple- Gods Truth is so plain even the simplest people can understand. Get people in the Word of God, and it is made for anyone to understand.
There’s a lot of people who don’t want to try to understand as it will make them change their life, and a lot of people do not like change.
But The Word of God was not for only Biblical scholars to understand. But told in such a way both the wise and simple can understand.
d. The Statues of the Lord----Right-------Rejoicing the Heart.
i. Statues- (precepts ASV)
ii. These are rules or guidelines. These would be special instructions which bring a spiritual satisfaction.
iii. Right- Everything God says to do is right. There is nothing wrong in His Word.
iv. Rejoicing the heart- if we live according to the Word of God even through persecution. Matt 5:12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad: for great is your reward in Heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
v. Psalm 119: 104 “Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore, I hate every false way.”
e. The Commandment of the Lord----Pure----Enlightening the Eyes.
i. The commandments- These are Gods laws. They are to be obeyed because God says so! We are to be baptized because God says so and that’s it. Just like Naaman had to dip in Jorden 7 times to be healed. Its obedience to God that is right.
ii. It is Pure- Pure is free from corruption. It is being Holy. Set apart.
iii. Enlightening the eyes- Gods laws, commandments make are paths clear. Brings light. Tells us how to live our lives.
iv. Psalm 119:105 “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
f. The Fear of the Lord----Clean------Enduring forever.
i. The Fear of the Lord- This is reverence.
ii. We fear the Lord for the Wrath that is Coming. Rom 5:9 Saved from wrath of God.
iii. Do you remember as a young child getting spankings? At School, at home?? Discipline is important for a child because that’s how they learn to fear the punishment. A Child must learn to fear and respect their parents so they will one day obey God the Father!!!
iv. Clean- Gods Law pure, clean, holy, free from error. If we live according to Gods Law and do it with reverence, we will live with a clean and pure conscience toward God.
v. Enduring forever- Gods Word will endure forever. We can take it to the bank. His wrath will also come. Some say God is a loving God and that He is, but as we see next with His judgments are right, a righteous Judge must punish the wicked to be just.
g. The Judgments of the Lord------ True--------Righteous altogether.
i. The Judgments of the Lord- Just like we expect a judge in court of law to be a good and fair Judge, God is the perfect and fair Judge. He will judge according to how we live.
ii. True- What God has warned us about, and told us to keep His commandments and statues, we will be accountable for how we live our life come judgment.
iii. Righteous altogether- Just like we would expect a murderer to get a life sentence or fair trial, God is the ultimate Judge and is no respecter of persons. He will give a righteous Judgement altogether.
h. Vs 10 More to be desired than gold, than much fine Gold.
i. God’s Word is more precious than Gold.
ii. Think about what man goes to fine gold, diamonds, silver, or any treasures. They dig deep down into the earth, spend there lives looking and hunting for it.
But as Jesus says lay your treasures in Heaven where robbers don’t steal. Man will go through deep measures to find Gold.
iii. Yet the real Gold is God’s Word which saves our Souls, which last for eternity. But many men don’t seek His Word which is the real treasure.
i. Sweeter than Honey and the honeycomb- The honey with the comb is the purest of the honey. Its normally really expensive to buy the honey with the comb because it’s the purest state. But Gods Word is purer than the best honey money can buy.
j. Vs 11 Moreover, By them is thy servant warned: The Word of God warns us of the things to come if we do not keep them. Luke 13:3,5.
k. Keeping of them are great reward: We can be certain if we keep Gods commandments, and obey him, we will get the great award awaiting on us.
l. John 14:2-3 “In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
III. His Protection declares His Glory (Psalm 19:12-14).
a. Vs 12 Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults.
i. The Word of God is what lets people know they are in error or sin!
ii. So important when trying to reach our family, friends, and neighbors we never jump to condemning them, saying well you know God and the Bible says!!
We must get people in a Bible study- teach them what they must do to be saved- then finish the great commission and teach them all things.
iii. The Bible will teach them their error. Even their secret ones that nobody knew, or they did not even know was wrong. The Word of God is powerful able to change the hearts of men.
b. Vs 13 The law keeps us from presumptuous sin.
i. This is sin where a person knows right and does wrong anyway.
ii. One of the greatest of these is pride: I like to think about Job, he was a righteous and upright man who offered sacrifices for his whole family, but he let pride overcome him and toward the end of Job he repents, and God forgives him.
iii. Let not them have dominion over him, and he shall be innocent from the great transgression:
Gods Law, testimony, statues, commandments, wrath, and judgements; if we keep all of them, we will be innocent. We will be redeemed, we will be delivered, we will have an eternal home.
c. Vs 14 Let thy words of my mouth, and meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight.
i. Rom 12:1-2 Transformed. Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man.
Conclusion: This Psalm is so beautiful and shows how all God’s creation declare there is a God.
The days show His knowledge and handy work.
The Law of the Lord makes people perfect. And the Lord’s statues are upright and sure. The law of the Lord will keep people from sin if they obey Him.
David says how the Lord is his strength and redeemer.
Tonight, when you get home just observe Gods beautiful creation.
First, we saw Creation Declares His Glory (Psalm 19:1-6).
Second, we saw the Law Declares His Glory (Psalm 19:7-11).
Finally, we saw His Protection Declares His Glory (Psalm 19:12-14).
