Living in the Anointing
Living in the Anointing
As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.
These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you.
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.
If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.
Key word that we find repeating within the text found this week: Beginning, I have written you, truth, lies, abide, children
As for you, let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.
The abide language that relates back to Jesus in 2:6 and the Young men in 2:14
The Beginning/Genesis reference is tied to the Elders
Abide is a perpetual action of “walking”
This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.
“eternal life” goes back to 1 John 1:2
and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us—
This is referring to the Resurrection and not Heaven
This is an eschatological promise
These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you.
Again, the author identifies the Antichrists as deceivers
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
The anointing theme is now is tied with abiding
The true Holy Spirit leads to the true truth
Which is found in Christ
Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.
He is asking his readership to abide like the young men had in verse 2:14 as well as the command in 2:6
1 john 2:29
If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.
Eternal life before Christ was rooted in righteousness
The route to this resurrecting righteousness is through Christ
‘You shall live in booths for seven days; all the native-born in Israel shall live in booths,
so that your generations may know that I had the sons of Israel live in booths when I brought them out from the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.’ ”
