THE WASHING OF THE FEET
You’re in it for someone! Moses was a person of wilderness for people of wilderness What you’re going through today you will lead people through tomorrow Love the people once you were like Jesus’ sufferings brought many people redemption not just sympathy
John 13:1-17
Jesus Came to Wash Feet Washing feet is shadow of Jesus’ ministry (Phil.2:5-11)
“Rose from supper” – rose up from position in heaven “Laid aside His garments” – put heavenly splendor aside “Took a tower & girded Himself” – took on a human nature “Began to wash the disciples’ feet” – minister to people
“Taken His garments” – took on heavenly nature
“Sat down again” – at the right hand of God He came on earth to do what others were not willing to do
Taking on a nature and a lifestyle of a “bomb”
We know what it’s like to go from son of man to son of God but Jesus knows the opposite
People washed by Jesus: Zacchaeus, Samaritan woman, prostitute, & adulterous “I don’t wash you, you have no part with Me”
It’s not just spiritual illustration but also practical demonstration
Jesus came to wash not only sin and sickness every other dirt
Fed people, calmed storms, raised the dead, healed sick, & cleansed lepers
Gospel is for poor, brokenhearted, captives, blind, and needy
Jesus Came to Wash Disciples Feet The dirt of rejection and dust of shame & hurt & offense Law says shake off the dust but Jesus wipes out the dust of His disciples’ feet Feet speak of daily activities – our feet get dirty our hearts get polluted Feet speak of evangelism – our feet get thorns and rejection and failure
Our Command is to Wash Each Other’s Feet Our command is to love, pray, forgive, care, not judge, not hate, not envy, lift, bless
Jewish tradition is provide water, or wash feet of guests. We don’t need to do that today Today there is a need for their spiritual feet to be washed
To wash someone’s feet requires humility on your part and lowering down to their level
