Psalm 119:57-64
When we go through some severe trials in this life we often realize what is truly important to us.
In the mountains we have few cares, and little to be concerned about.
So we usually don’t think about what really matters.
But when the valleys come, and something that we love is taken away
Our health,
a loved one,
our homes,
our jobs or business,
our freedom
We really begin to understand what we truly cannot live without.
The Psalmist was under a lot of pressure and was being attacked to get him to compromise his faith and obedience to God’s Word.
This persecution forced him to reevaluate what was important.
That is when he realized that God is all that he needs.
I used to sing a song in our youth group
Christ is all I need
Christ is all I need
All, All I need
Christ is all I need
Christ is all I need
All, All I need.
We see that Christ is all we need because he is our
I.
My Inheritance Giver
vs. 57
57 CHETH.
Thou art my portion, O Lord: I have said that I would keep thy words.
The Psalmist says that the Lord is his portion - that is inheritance, an allotment
He has come to this wonderful place where he says God was enough for him.
The Lord was what has been alloted to him, and that is enough.
Though no one else around him would help or stand by him, God was there…and that is enough!
It wasn’t even that God was meeting all his needs, but rather that he was declaring that God was all he needed.
Everything else may be taken away from him, but no one can strip God away!
At one point he confessed to struggling with covetousness:
But the Word of God had changed his heart.
When things are going rough, we sometimes find ourselves seeking refuge in other things in this world.
We escape through...
Work
Food
Movies
TV
Books
Romance stories
Sinful habits
But God is enough!
None of these things will keep us content, only that which truly satisfies the soul can help us.
Seek after God in times of despair, He is the only one that can help us.
Cry out You are my portion, Lord…You are all I need!
So Christ is all I need because He is my Inheritance Giver, and He is also...
II.
My Mercy Granter
vs. 58
58 I intreated thy favour with my whole heart: Be merciful unto me according to thy word.
He says that he intreated (sought for) God’s favour (literally face, but speaks to pleasing the person) with his whole heart.
What have we sought with our whole heart.
Can we say that about anything?
And if we can, is it the right thing?
The psalmist says He wanted to please God more than anything else.
Then he asks him to be merciful to him as God said he would.
It is helpful during times of despair to seek what the Word of God says about God’s faithfulness and mercy!
It is not disrespectful to remind God of His promises.
Truthfully, it pleases Him, because it shows Him our faith in His Word.
Christ is all I need, because He is My Inheritance Giver, and my Mercy Granter…and He is also...
III.
My Way Corrector
vs. 59-63
And Praise the Lord for that!
59 I thought on my ways, And turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
60 I made haste, and delayed not To keep thy commandments.
61 The bands of the wicked have robbed me: But I have not forgotten thy law.
62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee Because of thy righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, And of them that keep thy precepts.
The Psalmist says that he thought on his ways.
He examined his heart, and saw his sinful ways and repented of them - He turned his feet toward God’s testimonies.
Repentance literally means a change of direction.
Matthew Henry said, “When we are under conviction of sin we must strike while the iron is hot.”
It is important to remember that God will often use trials in our lives to get our attention when we have strayed from Him or His will.
Be sure to take a look, and even ask Him to show you, if there is anything between God and yourself that needs to be confessed and repented from.
If He reveals something, confess it, make moves to repent and turn from it, and go forward.
Don’t fall into the temptation to say things like, “God is mad at me for this.” or “God doesn’t love me.”
Both of these statements are lies and need to be replaced by the truth of God’s Word.
If we have confessed our sins He has promised to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Then go forward and ask God to show you how to grow from here.
Then the Psalmist continues and gives three commitments that he would keep, since he has repented:
A. Commit to Keep His Commandments
vs. 59-61
59 I thought on my ways, And turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
The Psalmist turned his feet - he is going to head in a new direction now.
That direction is the the way of God’s testimonies.
In fact he says in verse 60
60 I made haste, and delayed not To keep thy commandments.
He quickly obeyed God’s commands!
I tell my kids, Delayed obedience is disobedience.
If you do not obey with haste, you are not truly obeying!
What Sergeant in the Army will accept a private responding to his command with, “OK, I will just give me a second.”
No, you probably would not want to hear the response from the Sergeant!
Obey right away!
Then in verse 61 he says,
61 The bands of the wicked have robbed me: But I have not forgotten thy law.
He says, I have been attacked and robbed because of my stance on God’s Word, but I will not forget God’s Law!
