Excuse Me Neighbor, I’ve Got Something In My Eye
Matthew 7:1-5
Introduction
A Story is told of a lady who was standing at her kitchen window looking out and she saw her neighbor hanging out her clothes on the line.
She said to her husband, “She ought to be ashamed of herself, hanging those clothes on that line all dirty and spotted up.
She needs to learn how to wash clothes so she can get them clean.”
So the husband went on outside to do his work in the yard.
He came back in the kitchen and told his wife, you need to look a little closer, because the spots you see are not on the neighbors laundry, they are on your windows.
You need to wash your windows!
This woman was guilty of doing what so many of us are accustomed to doing on a daily basis, which is judging our neighbor.
Here in Matthew 7:1-5, we find what is probably the most quoted Bible verse by unbelievers.
It has become a common saying among the NOW generation to say, “Don’t judge me.”
They may not know any other Bible verses in the Bible, but they seem to know Matthew 7:1, “Judge not, that you be not judged.”
And what I find most interesting about this is: People who don’t know or love Jesus quoting Jesus to try to shut up people who love Jesus and are trying to live for Him.
And, sadly, this passage in Matthew is one of the most misunderstood and misapplied teachings in Scriptures by believers and non-believers alike.
For many have interpreted Jesus’ words here to mean that we can never make any type of judgment of someone’s actions or behaviors.
But this is not entirely true.
What we will see today is that Jesus was teaching us several principles about true and proper judgment.
[READ TEXT]
In these five verses, Jesus is teaching about the Pharisees and their practices in judging others.
The Pharisees were guilty of exercising a false judgment about themselves (they were so righteous), other people and even the Lord.
The Pharisees had the nerve to judge Jesus Christ and they judged him to be inadequate.
So Jesus used this illustration of a speck and a plank to show the grave mistake of incorrectly judging others.
He says to them, “why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plan in your own eye?
Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye; and look, a plan is in your own eye?”
What Jesus is essentially saying is that you’re trying to look at a speck of dust in your brother’s eye and you got a whole 2 x 4 Plank in your own eye!
(v5) Jesus says, “Hypocrite!
First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
Jesus was clearly give us some food for thought.
For the very next time, you start judging your brother or sister, you need to catch yourself and tell them, “Excuse me brother, but I’ve got something in my eye!”
You see the Pharisees judged and criticized others to make themselves look good.
But as Christians we should judge ourselves so that we can then see clearly how to help others.
I just want to give you 4 things the Bible says about Judging Others:
1. Jesus teaches us, NEVER JUDGE SUPERFICIALLY.
In John 7:24, Jesus says, Stop judging by mere appearance, but instead judge correctly.
Jesus is teaching us that there is a time to judge, but when you do judge, judge correctly, not just by mere appearance.
So many times, we’re judging folks on what somebody said, on what we saw or what we thought we say, but Jesus said, be careful that you don’t judge on mere appearance.
Because sometimes things are not what they seem to be.
You might not have all the information.
2. Jesus teaches us, NEVER JUDGE HYPOCRITICALLY.
In verse 5, Jesus called them hypocrites!
He say you got a whole 2 x 4 in your eye, how you gonna see clear to see a speck in somebody else’s eye?
The Apostle Paul had something to say about this also in Romans 2:1, 4.
He says, “Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.
-We tend to accuse others, but we excuse ourselves!
-The place where you issue your harshest judgment often reveals your deepest weakness.
3. The Bible teaches us, NEVER JUDGE OUTSIDE OF THE FAMILY.
IOW, We never hold non-Christians to Christians standards.
( 1 Cor.
5:12-13)
“For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside?
Do you not judge those who are inside?”
The late Dr. James McGinley put it this way: “I am no judge, but I am a fruit inspector.”
So, I am not your judge, but I am inspecting your fruit!
But 1 Cor.
5:13, says clearly, “But those who are outside God judges….”
I am not called to judge those outside of the family of God.
I am called to love them and introduce them not just by lip-style, but by life-style, to the God who is daily, changing me!
4. NEVER JUDGE BELIEVERS PERMANENTLY.
Galatians 6:1-2 teaches us, [1]“Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself, lets you also be tempted.”
[2] Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
We should seek to cover our brothers and sisters and help restore them and not talk about them, not run them in the ground.
Let’s help build each other up!
CLOSE: Hezekiah Walker wrote a song, “I NEED YOU TO SURVIVE”
I Need You To Survive
I need you
you need me
we're all apart of God's body
stand with me agree with me
we're all apart of God's body
It is His will that every need be supplied
You are important to me
I need you to survive
I'll pray for you
You pray for me
I love you
I need you to survive
I won't harm You
With words from my mouth
I love You
I need you to survive
