72 medals have been awarded in 2016, and 9,893 since the Carnegie Fund was created in 1904. Honorees also receive a financial grant; the Fund has given out $38.5 million in grants, scholarships, death benefits, and other assistance in the past 110 years.
Heroes comes in all shapes and sizes. One common thing is they are willing to put their life on the line to save others.
Nicholas Winton: 1938 saved 600 kids, now estimated 5000 descendants, kids transported to UK from Czechoslovakia. Did not tell anyone till his wife found it.
Nils Bohlin: Created ejector seats for fighter jets, in 1958 created seat belts after joining Volvo
James Harrison: Saved 2 million lives form blood he has donated, it contains rare antibody that can treat Rheses disease, made 1k donations since 1954 till 2011
Edward Jenner: Invented first vaccine and defeated smallpox. 18th century, 400k died annually.
Joseph saved the world by saving during time of famine
Esther saved the nation by stopping the plot of Human.
2009 study by German psychologists revealed that 18-month-old toddlers often provide “spontaneous, unrewarded” help to adults, retrieving a dropped clothespin, for instance, or opening a cabinet for a researcher whose hands are full!
January 15, 2009 Flight 1549 from New York with Captain Sullenberger, got hit with group of birds that killed engine. He lost the plane but saved people!
Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, and we remain silent. If we wait until morning light, some punishment will come upon us. Now therefore, come, let us go and tell the king's household.” 2 Kings 7:9
As bad as leprosy was, it was not deadly!
Leprosy very rare disease also called Hansen’s disease. 63 cases in US.
People in the city were dying of the same problem as lepers. 1/9, 12 percent, 795 million go hungry. 100 billion pounds of food wasted in US.
Lepers were looking for solution but not for skin disease
Explain what you experienced
- You are anointed to win souls, not arguments (Acts 1:8)
- Man with an experience is never at the mercy of man with an argument
- Witness needs not argue, plead or defend Jesus. Witness of resurrection!
The city needs a good news
- Paul and the city!
- Gospel is the good news. May not be new
- Humor, devil said why are you not afraid
- Taste and see Lord is good (Ps.34:8), Goodness leads to repentance. (Rom.2:4), God is only good (Ps.100:5)
- Beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news (Is.52:7)
- They deserve to die, but God provided life!
- Ambassador speaks on behalf of the king, reflects the world he belongs to, not world where he lives.
Don’t let problems trump your purpose (leprosy, rejection, skepticism)
- Gehazi gets leprosy (2 Kings 5:27), he talking to the king, lepers were excluded from society (2 Kings 8:4). Selfishness brought leprosy, caring for others removed it
- When God’s problems become your problems, your problems become God’s problems!
- This is my fight! 2 Chronicles 20:15
- When you save others, king will rescue you!
- If you abide, ask anything John 15:7
- Jesus said when you take my yoke, you will find rest Matthew 11:29 restlessness in situation.
