Make vows to the Lord your God, and pay them; Let all who are around Him bring presents to Him who ought to be feared. Psalm 76:11
An oath is a declaration of truth. In making an oath the person appeals to God to witness to the truth of a particular affirmation he is making. An oath can also be invoked in guarantee of a promise a person makes.
A vow, on the other hand, is a solemn pledge or promise to God to commit oneself to an act, a service or a condition of life.
Jacob made a vow, God prospered him (Gen.28:20)
Hannah made a vow, God gave her a son (1 Sam.1:11)
Israel’s judge made a vow, God gave him victory (Judges 11:29)
Samson broke the vow, suffered hardship (Judges 16)
Paul made a vow, he fulfilled it (Acts 21:23)
