When you want to be like someone, what do you do?
You look at everything that they do and you do that.
Sometimes it is a famous YouTuber or influencer that you see what they have or what they have accomplished you you think, I want that. So I'm going to look at what they do and I'm going to do just that.
you may have even watched a video about a day in the life of... AthletesFamous people in history Famous people today. You then begin to maybe change some of your behavior to be like that person or that job because you want the life they have.
What we are going to talk about for the next 40 hours is just that. The things that Jesus did.
Jesus Loved people to a ridiculous level. The greatest level of love. How then can we look at his life and what he did and do that?
The next 40 hours have the power to change your life If you let it.
We're going to talk about three things.
Jesus forgives sinners Jesus washes feet Jesus breaks bread
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,
but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
FORGIVING PEOPLE
Here in Matthew, this can feel like an uneasy passage. Some of you might even think right now " so if I don't forgive someone I lose my salvation"?? Or is my salvation in jeopardy??
Jesus is here in Matthew preaching the sermon on the mount. He is getting very deep. Straight to the heart. He wants you to wake up.
Jesus is not saying that you will lose your salvation. However - he is framing this statement in such a way that is saying " you much forgive "
Jesus is saying that your forgiving of others speaks to the evidence of your salvation and your forgiveness of the father. Many of you might think, if I have to forgive, what about the unforgivable??How do I forgive them? Should I forgive them?
(Reno Son Murdered)
What did Jesus do? Jesus actually does so much more than just forgive, but that's for tomorrow.
Today what we need to know is this. - JESUS FORGIVES SINNERS
Luke 23
CRUCIFIXION
The most amazing display of forgiveness ever to be seen or known by anyone is found in Luke 23. The crucifixion of Jesus.
The most painful and humiliating way to dieIt was very expensive. you are intentionally spending a lot of money to kill someone in the most painful and most humiliating way. Jesus was most likely lifted just a foot or so off of the ground on the cross, so that people could walk right up to him and smoke him or hit him as he died... slowly. As all of this is happening, you know what is going through the mind of Jesus?
look at Luke 23.34 - he prays for them, he forgives them. in the moment when you would thin it would be unforgivable. Jesus forgives sinners.
And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
TRANSITION GOD TO YOU
If you have lived long enough you have been hurt by someone...
You might even have a major wound from someone.
Maybe a parentMaybe a sibling or relative a friend or group of them maybe even someone you have never actually meta boss a church the list could go on and on
it could be something big, but it could also be something small.
Something you might deem insignificant. but that makes you ask the question, God why? Or maybe even be mad at God.
It might also be yourself. Maybe you have done something that you can't forgive. You carry it with you and you just cant let go of it.
If I can't forgive myself, how do I then forgive others that are unforgivable?
This raises the big question - HOW DO I FORGIVE SINNERS LIKE JESUS?
Jesus forgives sinners we are commanded to forgive
it is evidences our our relationship with Jesus
It even pulls from mark 12 as we are to love God and people.
There is no quick and easy way to forgive sinners and people who have hurt you. Ill say that right now.
But there are two things I believe we can do and remember that can move us in the right direction.
How do we forgive like Jesus?
How do we forgive like Jesus?
Pray for those who hurt you
Pray for those who hurt you
bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.
Jesus talks about this even more in Matthew 5.43-44 - you have said, but I say unto you... love your enemy and pray for them
the upside-down kingdom.
love your enemies
Romans worshiped the God of revenge(that is a large part of who Jesu is talking to) it was crazy then and it might even sound crazy now.
Jewish culture was also historically taught "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" (a story about sam)
But don't we do the same? You do me wrong, I'm going to do you wrong? You flip me off driving, I'm going to flip you off...
But maybe not so extreme, maybe it's, you don't talk to me so why should I talk to you? Your not my friend so I'm not yours? You don't share your life so I don't share mine.
It might have been their culture, but it is ours as well.
Why did Jesus teach this?
Many reasons - but one I believe is a right attitude
My prayer for others may not change them, but it always changes me.
A right attended proceeds right actions.
"There is no way I will forgive that person, not with the way I feel right now" If you are waiting to be in the right mood to forgive, it will never happen. you will never be in the mood.
You start doing something in your mind long before it is in action.
The renewing of your mind leads to the right attitude and then to the right actions. Paul teaches us this.
How do you begin to forgive sinners and the unforgivable? you pray for them. Because your prayer for others may never change them but it will always change you.
Forgive as you have been forgiven
Forgive as you have been forgiven
bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
To forgive in the same way that God has forgiven you...
THink about all the things that you have been forgiven as a Christian....
All the lies, the lust, the greed, the hate, foolishness. It goes on and on.
Jesus says in me you are forgiven of all of that, now go and forgive as I have forgiven you.
THen we are like "NO!"
You might think, that person took my boyfriend or girlfriend, or they spread rumors about me, not I have the grounds to spread the truth about them or to slander them. But no, you also have grounds to forgive them as you have been forgiven.
You might not have the power in the flesh to forgive, but you always have the power in the spirit.
"Forgiving someone wont change the past, but it can change your future"
BUT HOW DO I FORGIVE THEM? - BITTERNESS
You always have a choice - To be obedient or to be bitter
the road to bitterness
Everytime I see them I am mad. They might not even know I'm mad, but I am.
Its driving me crazy whenever they are around. I cant stand them.
Bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. (is that what you really want?)
Let it go"As God let go of my sin, so I let go of yours"
I forgive because Jesus first forgave me and forgiving wont change the past but it can change my future.
CONCLUSION
If we are to be followers of Jesus we are called to something greater.
Something better. A life that is more abundant.
The world will tell you - love those who love you and cancel the rest. But jesus says that's not how we do it. Love your enemies Pray for those who hurt youForgive as we have been forgiven
Because Jesus forgives sinners and so should we.
