Pilate dismisses the case
Pilate dismisses the case
Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.” This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.
Charges - if he were not doing evil we would not have brought him to you
inadequate and vague

Pilate dismisses the case
Jews demand the death penalty
illegal to put anyone to death
Not that they would not do so (Steven)
Political scheme to put the fault on the Romans for Jesus death
New Charge
He has made himself out to be king of the Jews
And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”
Pilate interrogates Jesus
Pilate interrogates Jesus
So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?” Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him. But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
Are you king of the Jews?
fear of rebellion against Rome
He will be held accountable
Jesus Response
My Kingdom is not of this world
Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
My purpose is to bear witness to the truth
I have not come to lead a rebellion against Rome but to bear witness to the the Truth
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus goes on to say that he and the Father are one. Therefore Jesus is really saying the Triune God is the Truth and it is God whom He is bearing witness about.
This is the purpose for which Jesus came that Man might know God and have a relationship with him and love him with all their being. To Restore that which was lost in the Garden. The ability to commune with God to talk to him and walk with him to live in his presence. And it is for this purpose Jesus is standing here before Pilate soon to be sentenced to death on the Cross. Salvation for man was not the end but rather the beginning of Jesus plan for us. His true Goal was much higher and much greater than mere salvation. He wanted us to become his friends and family to know him as he knows us to love him as he loves us. We often think of Salvation as simply the forgiveness of sin and the gift of life instead of death as we deserve. Yet Jesus says here as he often has in the past that he came to restore our relationship to God. Salvation involves a restoration of fellowship with God.
Pilate then declares Jesus not Guilty
I find no guilt in him. three times he says this
Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.
Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.”
When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.”
Three times Pilate says Jesus is guiltless, innocent and without fault
Pilate Heeds the Crowds
Pilate Heeds the Crowds
But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
Pilate seeks to release Jesus and offers them Jesus or Barabbas.
He believes they will clearly choose Jesus over Barabbas
But is shocked when they choose Barabbas
Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”
Pilate seeks to beat him to scourge him. The scourging was designed to rip flesh to the bone and rip chucks of flesh off. Many would die of blood loss and shock just from the pain. Then they clothe him in purple and twist a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and mock him saying hail king of the Jews. Then Pilate brings him out again expecting pity to be shown for a man so badly beaten but the Jews cry out crucify. He claims he is the Son of God he should be killed.
Pilate again seeks to release Jesus in
From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,
Jews accuse Pilate if you release Jesus you are no friend of Caesar so finally Pilate sits down at the judgment seat.
The sixth hour or about 6 am according to Roman time
But when he brings out Jesus the people call for crucifixion
Shall I crucify your king
We have no king but Caesar
So Pilate delivers him over to be crucified.
The guiltless will die the death reserved for the worst of criminals.
