Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
The Philistines were the oldest and most fierce enemies of Israel - almost 600 years they fought bitters wars with the Philistines.
Israel was denied access to the Mediterranean Sea because of the placement of the Philistine Pentapolis, a five city stronghold - Ashdod, Ashkelon, Ekron, Gath and Gaza.
The Philistines also had a tactical advantage over Israel because they had the technology to make iron so their chariots and weapons were superior.
They would outlast the Northern Tribes of Israel and be a constant thorn is the side of the Southern Tribes.
The Philistines would not be defeated until Nebuchadnezzer but they still live on to torment Israel today and the word Palestine come from the root word Philistia…
Oddly enough, the highlight of the 600 year war did not come through some cunning military maneuver, or some great clash of arms of some battlefield...
Rather it came at the hand of an unknown boy named David.
David would kill the Philistine champion, Goliath.
Goliath - literally a giant!
9 1/2 feet tall
126 pounds of brass armour
Spear shaft was the size of a mans bicep
Spear head weighed 15 lbs
Challenged Israel to single combat.
Morning, noon and night - Give me a man to fight!
Looser enslaves his people.
And into this setting walks an inexperienced teenager named David.
David’s Bio
Youngest of 8 sons
Shepherd who had a food delivery job on the side.
He arrives to hear the challenge...
His youth has not taught him caution or political correctness…
Anger bursts within him as he sees the fear in the army’s eyes!
In 1 Sam. 17:26 - “…who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God!”
His brothers try and put him in his place...
Word gets to King Saul...
Impressed with David, he tries to get him to use his royal armor...
Finally David is sent to face the Giant!
The problem that Israel had come to the place in their walk with God that they thought they had it figured out.
Some incredible battles had been fought, victories won, confidence gained…
To the point where Israel was actually believing that it was because of their strength, there ability, there military power that mattered.
They thought that they had to figure it out…
BUT David knew it was not his power that would defeat Goliath...
(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
Carnal Side:
Experienced soldiers of Israel - apathetic fearful
Great armies with giants in them
Advanced weaponry
King how had lost trust in God and God had lost trust in him
Spiritual Side:
Young boy with a great trust in God
Paul would write about this in the NT...
Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Conclusion:
Some that are facing giants…
Things in your life that you have proven to yourself that you can’t deal with by your own power… It’s time to let God fight your battles!
We have giant killers here today!
