Objective
Every Christian should put to death their false self in order to pursue the life of being transformed into the likeness of Christ.
Key Verse
Opening
I am still a sinner
Only been up a few hours, but how many times have I sinned?
Selfishness in letting Gail get up to make our coffee.
Failure to slow down and pray for this meeting and this message.
Any other examples from the morning.
Should have stayed in bed!
Are you plagued by your false self?
It is an inescapable fact that Christians sin.
You sin.
Many of you regret it and try to live otherwise, but you may feel plagued by your false self.
Try this False Self Assessment from Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, to see if that's true:
I am reluctant to admit my weaknesses and flaws to others.
I look for the approval of others more than I should.
I am highly “offendable” and defensive when people criticize me.
I often become harsh and impatient when things are moving too slowly or my expectations are not met.
I say “yes’ when I would rather say “no”.
I beat myself up when I make mistakes.
I have difficulty speaking up when I disagree or prefer something different.
I have a number of people I am struggling to forgive.
My fears often cause me to play it safe “just in case.”
My body is more often in a state of tension and stress than relaxed.
Sound familiar?
If two/three, then you may fall foul of false self and sin at times.
If five/six, then moderate case of falling into old patterns of thinking and desires/dictates of the flesh.
If six or more, then this message might be gentle wake up call to discover a deeper journey with Jesus!
When best efforts, determination and spiritual disciplines seem to fail to make us more like Christ, then we begin to wonder, will we ever be holy as God is holy?
Can we break the power of sin over us?
Can we banish the presence of sin from around us?
Can we rid ourselves of the temptation to sin?
God
We have died with Christ
How have we died?
Christ's death on the cross was a huge NO to sin.
Jesus broke the power of sin over us.
His death proves that Christ, and those hidden with him, have the power to banish sin from their lives and live without the temptation to go back to old/foolish ways.
Our faith in Christ affirms this victory.
Our death with Christ involves a very real change in our being.
We become a new creation.
Our old creation is completely transformed.
We are separated from what we were before we were hidden with Christ.
How do you know if you are hidden in Christ?
One of the key indicators is your relationship to sin: You know you are forgiven, and you are able to come out from under sin's control.
Does that describe you this morning?
3 There in the ground his body lay,
Light of the World by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave he rose again!
And as he stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am his and he is mine ?
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

We are no longer slaves to our false self
Paul believes that having died and been hidden in Christ we are free from sin, free from condemnation, free from worldly contamination and free from sin's control over us.
The temptation to sin remains.
We live in a sinful world, and it will continue to beckon us back to our old lives.
But we no longer have to say yes.
We have the power - the HS power - to say no.
Have you ever done something wrong, and then complained, "But I couldn't help it, that's just the way I am"?
Maybe anger, nasty comment about someone, gossip, greed, swearing, told a lie - just some of the sins Paul lists in Colossians 3.
The problem is, Bible tells us the Christian who is dead in Christ and dead to sin can help it.
Christ has broken the power of sin over you.
He has set you free from being "just the way you are" to being who he made you to be.
Application
You have death duties to pay
You and I have a responsibility.
As people in union with Christ, he commands real and practical requirements to live without sin.
If the water we drank from our taps was contaminated, it probably wouldn't make us feel any better that the pollution was only just over the acceptable limit.
So we should treat sin the same way.
There is no such thing as a little sin that does little harm.
Jesus demonstrated a zero tolerance to sin, and so should we.
Being dead to sin and alive in Christ is so much more than simply getting rid of a few vices and replacing them with coming to the meeting on a Sunday.
It's more than trying to do better.
It's more than limping along making slow progress.
We cannot say yes to Christ when it's convenient, and no when it's not.
We must make a continuous, ongoing effort.
Sense: Keep on setting your heart on things above.
Such a focus does not come automatically.
Next Steps
Look to the future
As you make this strenuous effort to live a holy life, take hope from the future Paul promises us.
What a spectacular future to look forward to.
Will you commit to taking your eyes off the things of this world?
Will you commit to setting your mind on the things above?
Will you submit your life to God and allow him to transform you into the likeness of Christ?
Will you daily offer yourself to God?
Will you daily grow in holiness?
