THIS MISSION IS A MANDATE

WHAT IS THE MISSION?
▪ Recap last week
Romans 10:13–15 NLT
13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”

We Must Make Disciples

Matthew 28:19–20 NLT
19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
• Jesus was clear. Our purpose in life is to make disciples
▪ We have to teach people to walk in obedience
▪ We also have to be willing to let people teach and challenge us to walk in obedience
▪ We need to be making disciples and be discipled
♦ We often focus on salvation but If you are not willing to disciple a person, why would you win them to Christ?
Colossians 1:27–29 NLT
27 For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory. 28 So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ. 29 That’s why I work and struggle so hard, depending on Christ’s mighty power that works within me.
We don’t just want people to accept Christ, We WANT THEM TO BE MATURE
▪ Maturity involves
• Receiving from people when they admonish you
• Be hungry to receive teaching

We Must Understand What It Means to Be a Disciple

A disciple is a fully devoted follower of Jesus.
In order for a person to be a fully devoted follower of Jesus they need to
LEARN – A true disciple is always learning (being humble and willing to receive from godly mentors)
LIVE – A true disciple doesn’t just receive from a person and learn information, they actively work to live out what they are learning.
LEAD - A true disciple leads other people in learning and living out their faith.
Every person needs a Paul (mentor), a Silas (iron sharpening iron), and a Timothy (a person being discipled)
♦ Paul was discipling SO many people.
♦ Silas (in Acts 16) was a peer who strengthened Paul
♦ Timothy

We Must Be Faithful to Making Disciples

1 Corinthians 3:6 NLT
6 I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.
♦ We have to be faithful to do our part.
♦ Are we aware of the opportunities that God is giving us?

We Must Have a Heart for Making Disciples

Ezekiel 3:18–21 NLT
18 If I warn the wicked, saying, ‘You are under the penalty of death,’ but you fail to deliver the warning, they will die in their sins. And I will hold you responsible for their deaths. 19 If you warn them and they refuse to repent and keep on sinning, they will die in their sins. But you will have saved yourself because you obeyed me. 20 “If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and ignore the obstacles I put in their way, they will die. And if you do not warn them, they will die in their sins. None of their righteous acts will be remembered, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths. 21 But if you warn righteous people not to sin and they listen to you and do not sin, they will live, and you will have saved yourself, too.”
Acts 20:24–26 NLT
24 But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God. 25 “And now I know that none of you to whom I have preached the Kingdom will ever see me again. 26 I declare today that I have been faithful. If anyone suffers eternal death, it’s not my fault,
• Are We Moving Toward the Mess?
Jesus’ ministry continuously moved toward the mess
He cast out demons, healed deadly diseases, spent time with betrayers (tax collectors), prostitutes, and notorious sinners.
➢ His ministry was messy,
➢ Are we moving toward the mess or are we stuck in complacency.
