Introduction
We are starting a new series for the month of October… Holy Spirit and how we can live the spirit driven life.
We talked a few weeks ago about the process of sanctification and that our life doesn’t stop at salvation.
Salvation is not the end, it’s the start.
If salvation were the end, there wouldn’t be a need for the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is the one who dwells within us after we’re saved and through Him are salvation is fleshed out.
Body
If I said the words, Holy Spirit, what word(s) come to your mind?
To get to living the Spirit driven life you have to know some fundamental truths.
The Holy Spirit is God Himself.
Some people think that the Holy Spirit is a force or an energy field, but in face He is a person.
The Holy Spirit is not a personality like an angel or some other kind of spirit. He is fully and completely God. He is divine and the 3rd member of the trinity.
By show of hands, have you heard of the word trinity before? Probably was in church.
The word trinity or godhead refers to God being one God, but having 3 members who eternally co-exist. Each member of the Trinity dwells together in unity with each other.
Your relationship with the Holy Spirit is vital for your Christian walk.
Lots of people focus on salvation and baptism, but that’s a one-time event. That’s an initiation into a life of following Jesus, but the Holy Spirit is our ever-present Helper, Guide, and Teacher.
He leads us on this lifelong journey.
Some people believe God only speaks through His word and He does, but its not the only way that He communicates with His sons and daughters.
God uses His word and His Spirit to communicate to you.
God wants you to read His Word, but He also wants us, as sons and daughters, to be aware of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us.
There’s power available through Him that will make you an effective witness to those around you.
John 14:15–20 (NIV)
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
Jesus is foretelling the disciples about His death and resurrection (SPOILER ALERT).
I can imagine that the disciples were a little disappointed hearing this news, right?
Seriously? Why you leaving us Jesus?!
Jesus quickly tells them that when He goes to heaven, He will not leave us as orphans.
[READ IN NIV TRANSLATION]
John 16:4–11 (NIV)
I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
The Bible uses this word advocate to describe the Holy Spirit. So I looked it up…
Advocate — person who pleads on someone else’s behalf:
That is what the Holy Spirit is. He’s not a mystical ghost or feeling; He’s a person that goes to the Father and Son and pleads on our behalf.
John 16:4–11 (M:BCL)
I’ve told you these things so that when the time comes and they start in on you, you’ll be well-warned and ready for them.
“I didn’t tell you this earlier because I was with you every day. But now I am on my way to the One who sent me. Not one of you has asked, ‘Where are you going?’ Instead, the longer I’ve talked, the sadder you’ve become. So let me say it again, this truth: It’s better for you that I leave. If I don’t leave, the Friend won’t come. But if I go, I’ll send him to you.
“When he comes, he’ll expose the error of the godless world’s view of sin, righteousness, and judgment: He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin; that righteousness comes from above, where I am with the Father, out of their sight and control; that judgment takes place as the ruler of this godless world is brought to trial and convicted.
God promises all Christians the gift of the Holy Spirit.
God is so kind in his nature to leave us with His Spirit; dwelling within us.
Closing
Tonight as we close, I want to ask you this question:
Are you living a Holy Spirit driven life?
Maybe you would say, “Pastor Peyton, I never given my life to Christ.”
Tonight, I would love to pray with you to receive the free gift of salvation.
If you are a Christian but you answered no, I want to ask you:
“What do you need to do to enable Him to help you?
Do you need to change the friends around you, do you need to make time to read God’s Word, what needs to change?
