Root & Fruit Principle
-difficult circs/annoying people may prompt words, actions, feelings attitudes, but they are not the root cause
-sin flow from the root of the heart
Sin beneath the sin
-the issue goes deeper than what I see manifested outwardly
-why am I struggling with
self-pity, envy, fear, anxiety, anger, unforgiveness, control, demandingess, over-spending, over-eating, over-working
-What is my heart treasuring, desiring, worshipping that is so important that I find myself stuck in these patterns
Heart clarity…we need more than directions/how tos/methods
…we need a Redeemer who can rescue my heart
GOSPEL IDENTITY
Every am when you wake up you are living out your answer to “who am I”
-by nature we are meaning makers…make meaning out of life, specifically our lives
-the most basic question our meaning making asks is “who am I”
Where do you draw you sense of identity?
Your most essential/basic identity is answered in this question
TO WHOM ARE YOU UNITED?
UNITED TO WHOM?
God only sees 2 types of people in the world…based on who you are united with that represents you before God
Rom.
5:18-20 “Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.
For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
(5:15-20)
UNION WITH ADAM
Adam..appointed by God as our representative in the Garden…his/Eve’s choices would have consequences for the entire human race
-in a highly individualized western culture, we have a hard time accepting this representation stuff
-however, traditional cultures understand representation
Because of our solidarity with Adam
All Sinned
Rom.
5:12 “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—”
Adam’s sin had consequences for all humanity to come
we inherit Adam’s legal guilt/condemnation before God

UNION WITH CHRIST
Paul’s theme in Rom.
6:1-11… highlight terms that reflect our connection with Christ
REPRESENTATIVE UNION (Rom.
5)
Addresses the issue of our GUILT/CONDEMNATION BEFORE GOD
Rom 5:16 “And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin.
For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification.”
(5:18, 19)
-justification is a courtroom term…to be acquitted, declared innocent of all charges
-not acquired by our good record but as a free gift to those whose record deserves judgement
-by faith we are united with Christ’s active obedience/perfect sinless life on our behalf
Rom.
3:21-22 “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

VITAL UNION (Romans 6)
Addresses the Issue of our corrupt, twisted heart
You are united with Christ’s death/r’n

You are united so completely with Jesus’ death & r’n that you are no longer the person you once were…you have died, been buried and raised with Jesus into newness of life
Who are you in vital union with Christ?\
Brought to life
Rom 6:4 “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
Rom.
6:13 “Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.”
Where you were once dead, enslaved, mastered…all that has changed
-Dead to sin (6:2, 11)
-No longer slaves to sin (6:6, 14)
-set free from sin (6:7)
Something definitive has happened to sin’s mastery of your heart
-it is still present
-still has power to influence you
-but it is no longer your dictator, the law that dominates your heart
If you really live into your vital union with Christ by faith you will never see grace
-as an excuse for sin
Rom.
6:1-2 “What shall we say then?
Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?
By no means!
How can we who died to sin still live in it?”
-nor will you see yourself has helpless trapped, hopelessly victimized in patterns of sin
