I. Introduction.
I. Introduction.
I hope that the time we have spent studying the Tabernacle together has been good for you and your walk with God.
I know I have enjoyed it!
Still, all good things must come to an end!
And we are almost there. Next week oughtta wrap it up!
Of course, your personal study of the Tabernacle does not have to end!
And if you wish, I can give you the names of a few authors who’s writings can take your study further!
But let us round out our series today and next Thursday and call that a foundation.
You can take it from here, and build as high as you wish!
The important thing is that you remember the purpose for the Tabernacle.
Does anybody remember? Wanna take a stab at it?
God wanted to do something He had never quite managed since the Garden of Eden, and even then, it was different.
God desired to dwell among His people!
God desired to dwell among His people!
How exactly did He manage this?
In three ways:
He did this in the wilderness Tabernacle and in the Temple.
He next dwelt among His people in the person of Jesus Christ!
A temple not of brick or block, gold and silver, but a temple of meat and bone!
More valuable and precious than this world had ever seen or would see!
Oh the value of one single drop of Jesus’ blood!!!! Inestimable!
God dwelt among His people in the tent, the Temple, He dwelt here among us physically and now in His church!
Now someone might tell you to prove it!
“Are you telling me that Jesus still dwells on this very earth? It is 2022 After all! I though Jesus was dead!”
“Prove to me that Jesus dwells among His people, the church!”
Sure! 2 Cor 6:16
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
The other purpose of the Taberncale was to provide types or symbols of Christ and the Church!
The other purpose of the Taberncale was to provide types or symbols of Christ and the Church!
This is the least that you need to know and now you do!!!!
Thus far we have talked about every part of the Tabernacle except the Holy of Holies.
Let us begin that discussion with an understanding of “The five offerings.”
These five offerings to be made unto the lord, are covered in the first five chapters of Leviticus and they are:
The Burnt offering.
The Meat/Meal offering.
The Peace Offering
The Sin Offering
The Trespass Offering.
The Burnt Offering.
The Burnt Offering.
Each offering pictures some phase of Christ’s work for humanity.
The Burnt offering was a freewill offering given for sin in general. (not some specific sin.)
This offering signifyed complete dedication to Jehovah
The burnt offering was to be a male bullock without any blemish.
No offering was allowed to have any imperfection whatsoever!
It was to be cut into pieces and all of those pieces were to be burned on the altar!
Lev 1:3 lays down a requirement that the offering had to be given freely
If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord.
Now if something is taken from you, it is a loss.
But when you give something dear, it is a sacrifice!
The sacrifice must be voluntary!
And in this the Scriptures are very clear:
Jesus laid his life down in purpose.
Willingly, voluntarily!
The entire animal was given and nothing was held back, not the choicest cuts, nothing! Not any horns for handles or hoofs for gelatin, nothing! It all burnt up!
And this is a picture of the complete surrender of Christ Jesus, as He gave Himself in death!
Nothing was held back!
(And he asks us for so little…)
Yes, Jesus died. A horrible death, legally reserved for criminals and slaves.
But this was the global plan!!!!!
Jesus was not outsmarted, outwitted or anything like!
In fact, listen to what Paul says in 1 cor!
Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
You have to realize, Jesus died on purpose!
He submitted himself to their brutal savagery!
The armies of heaven, more powerful than any other army could ever be, those angels followed their orders and did not rescue the natural body of Jesus Christ!
How easy would it have been for Jesus to let them slaughter every Roman in sight!!!!!!
And everyone else for that matter!
Blind pharisees, Sinful Hypocrites, ungrateful children!
But no! Jesus spent His blood for us!
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
The Bible says that the priests were to wash the innards of the sacrifice with water.
This shows not only Christ’s own Holiness, but also what he expects from His own, you and me!
I don’t think God really cares about my suit or tie or fancy duds!
He’s more interested with the inner parts.
He wants us clean on the inside.
We know it don’t we? We feel that.
Listen to David’s prayer of repentance:
Psalm 51:6 (KJV 1900)
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts...
The Meat /Meal Offering.
The Meat /Meal Offering.
The meat offering is better rendered: “Meal Offering.”
It was actually the only sacrifice without any blood!
It was made of fine flour that had oil poured on it.
“Something fine.”
Being offered without blood, it refers to the life of Christ, rather than to His death.
Aren’t you grateful that His ministry was not only a ministry of death, but also, a ministry of life!!!!
The flour and the Oil symbolize His humanity and His deity.
The fine flour indicates the perfection of His humanity.
When the frankincense was put on the oil and the fire was applied, it made a sweet savor before the Lord.
Very sweet, but only with fire.
Who here has ever known the heat of some trials?
Maybe you’re in the fire even now!
But know this: The fire of trials serve to bring out the purity and Holiness of Christ’s nature in you!
There is a reason for it!
God has a plan for that sweet smell!
And it may just involve the salvation of other people!!!!!
Now this particular offering was seasoned with salt.
Did you know the scripture directly connects salt with our speech?
Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
When you turn the harsh word aside, when you answer a swearword with measured grace and a Godly attitude, I want you to know that Jesus hears it!!!!
Now folks, there’s nobody stopping you from burning candles and incense to God like other religions!
You could have your own little shelf with oranges and incense for God.
But if you do, it won’t mean much to Him!
Humans, do this thing, where we try to replace obedience with sacrifice.
But that doesn’t work either!
Burn joss sticks ever hour of every day with an unclean heart and a dirty mouth, and it accomplishes nothing at all!
But you can do something better!
Something that God notices!!! He watches for it and values it!!!!
You can take the higher rode!
When offenses come, try to take it on the chin!
Sacrifice your right to reprisal!
It is noblething ! A fine sacrifice!
“Something fine.”
And that sacrifice rises before Jesus a sweet savor!
The Peace Offering.
The Peace Offering.
Both the guilty one and the priest received a portion of this offering.
This was to be eaten before the Lord and pictures our communion with Him.
Just as that lamb or goat had to be killed and and subjected to fire before it was eaten, so our fellowship with God is brough about only on the basis of the suffering and death of Christ.
Christ Jesus had to die!
For all those folks who regret your wrongs and you feel so unworthy, know that you are not alone! We all feel that way and we are all unworthy!!!!
But that is not the point! The point is: Our relationship with Jesus is made possible and predicateed on the basis of HIS death!
He was not bewildered at a terrible misfortune!
Jesus made the choice of sacrifice!
He showed us what greatness truly is!
Our Kinsman Redeemer!
Japan: A seashore village, some hundreds of years ago...
It was a warm autumn evening when a small earthquake startled the villagers.
Being used to earthquakes, they soon went back to their activities.
Above the village, on a high plain, an old farmer was watching from his house.
He looked at the sea, and the water appeared dark and acted strangely, moving against the wind, running away from the land!
The old man knew what it meant, His one thought was to warn the people down in the village!
He called to His grandson: “Bring me a torch! Hurry!”
There, in the fields behind him, lay his great crop of rice.
Piled in stacks ready for the market, it was worth a fortune!
It represented his blood, sweat and tears! All that He had!
The old man hurried out with his torch, In a moment the dry stalks were blazing!
Then the big bell pealed from the temple below!
“Fire!”
Back from the beach, away from the strange sea, up the steep side of the cliff, came the people of the village!
The were trying to save the crops of their rich neighbor. “He’s mad.” they said.
As they reached the plain, the old man shouted back at the top of his voice “Look!”
At the edge of the horizon, they saw a long, lean, dim line, a line that thickened as they gazed.
That line was the sea, rising like a high wall and racing to the shore!
Then came the shock, heavier than thunder, the great swell hit the shore with a weight that sent a shudder through the hills and tore their homes to match sticks!
That great wave struck again, and again, and yet again!
Once more it struck and ebbed; then it returned to its place.
On the plain, no word was spoken. Then the voice of the old man was heard, saying gently “that is why I set fire to the rice.”
He stood among them almost as poor as the poorest for his wealth was all gone.
He had saved four hundred lives by his sacrifice.
We are only free because of His sacrifice!
Jesus saved whomsover will!
Legally freed from death and hell!
The righteous dead and the unborn saints of the future!
Some of whom find themselves in an upper room on a Thursday night 7,385 miles away, two thousand years later!
He made it possible for anyone from anywhere to obey His Gospel and be spared from Judgement and death!
Oh thank you Jesus!
What then is the question of our time?
What then is the question of our time?
Of all times?
Peace! Where and how do I find peace?”
“Wanna know how to find peace?
Everyone seems to want peace.
In this dark world of hurt and multiplied sorrows, everyone needs peace!
An inner calm, an understanding that everything is going to be alright!
One little boy described peace as “When you feel all smooth inside.”
It is a thing to cherish!!!
And then wise lady said this: “Sometimes God calms the storm, then sometimes he lets the storm rage and calms His child.
It’s peace either way.
I thank God for the access that we have to Peace!
Well, you can have it!
Our peace is brought about by faith in the peace offering the Christ made!!!!
Say to yourself: Jesus Christ has made His peace offering. I will have faith in that!”
Jesus does good work!
Have faith in His Work!!!
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
The last two offerings were the sin and the trespass offerings.
The last two offerings were the sin and the trespass offerings.
The sin offering was for the nature of sin, a thing shared by all mankind.
The Trespass offering was for actual sins committed.
The Day Of Atonement.
The Day Of Atonement.
Leviticus chapters 16 and 17 describe the Day of Atonement.
This special day was in addition to the five offerings.
This portion of the Tabernacle worship is an outsstanding object lesson, a silent sermon picturing for all to come, the central and most important theme of the Bible: The doctrine of the atonment!
Let us come in our mind’s eye and follow the high priest as he carefully obeys the great Jehovah and proceeds to carry out the instructions for that special day.
In lev 16, Moses warned Aaron that only in a special mannner woud he be able to approach the mercy seat and Holy Place.
He first had to make a sin offering for himself. In this, he is a type of Christ only by contrast, as Heb 7 explains.
However, in all that follows in the ceremony which he performed for the peopple, he is a positive type of Jesus as our true High Priest.
Observe that his clothing for this special occasio was entirely different.
He exchanged his beautiful priestly garments for garments of plain white linen.
He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on.
He then took from the congregation of Israel two goat kids and cast lots over them at the door of the Tabernacle.
There had to be two goats for there were definitely two sides of the Day of atonement:
First to satisfy the wrath of God, and second, to carry away the sins of the people.
The lots decided which goat was to be used for each purpose.
He then took a censer full of burning coals from off the altar, a supply of sweet incense, and a basin of blood from the bullock slain as the sin offering.
He then disappeared from the sight of the people, passed through te sanctuary, and went behind the veil into the Most Holy Place.
There he put the incnese upon the burning coals, so that a cloud covered the mercy seat, protecting himself from death.
He then sprinkled the blood upon the mercy seat and retraced his steps so as to appear again before the people.
He then killed the goat upon which the lot had fallen, took its blood within the veil, and made an atonement for Israel “Becasue of their transgressions.”(Lev 16:16)
He then reappeared and laid both of his hands upon the head of the living goat and confessed over him “All the iniquities of the children of Israel....”Putting them upon the head of the goat and sent him away.
Thus both sides of the Atonement were fully presented: The slain animal satisfying the wrath of God and the scapegoat showing what the Atoniement accomplished for Israel in bearing away the sins of the people!
But I want you to see this:
Christ took those sins aways as far as the East is from the West when he died on Calvary!
That typical atonement sacrifice had to be made once a year, but Christ’s offering had to be made only once!
Everybody say: “Once is enough!”
By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake,
And will not remember thy sins.
Folks you can be thankful for good weath, thankful for rain, thankful for a roof over your head and a place to sleep.
I am thankful that Jesus blots out my transgressions and does not remember my sin!
What is the Bible all about folks?
Oh so much!
But it would be mere pages and ink, were it not for this doctrine of the Atonement!
Jesus did not change the rules when mankind fell and earned death and judgement.
He could have changed the rules and done away with suffering and judgement.
He did not do that, He chose to suffer the judgement Himself!
He took our sin and paid the price for our iniquities!
So yes folks, we are Jesus Name people!!!!
And we are thankful!
