This morning we look at more of Jesus’s teaching
I am sure we could continue with the Parables but I think we have come to an end of the Parables of Jesus
Not to say we won’t ever come back to the parables but for now I think we have come to an end on this series
So as we come to an end I wanted us to focus on Jesus’s teaching not a parable but still His teaching
When you think of some of the teachings or words of Jesus
You can’t help but remind yourselves of what Jesus says in Galilee
Mark 1:14–15 NASB95
14 Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
This is after John the Baptist has been arrested
If you will recall John the Baptist is the cousin of Jesus and was arrested because he had spoken out against King Herod Antipas and his marriage
Jesus is traveling between Judah and Galilee
He is going into the area of Galilee
This would have been where Jesus was raised
A lot of Jesus’s ministry happened in this area
So it is almost no big deal that He is going to Galilee as that is where Jesus spent a lot of his time
Notice though Mark says that as Jesus was coming into Galilee that Jesus is preaching the Gospel of God
The Gospel means the good news
The good news about God
What Jesus was preaching was that Salvation has come to the Jews
Then we know that because it came to the Jews first it was then to be given to the whole world by the Jews
But Jesus is preaching that salvation has come
That is good news about God and good news from God
When the Jews would have heard that or even when they would have read it later they would have seen Kingdom of God or Gospel of God and read or understood it to be more of a political revolution
Remember the Jews were looking for a savior from the Romans occupation instead of an eternal savior
I wonder how many of us look for a good friend or buddy in Jesus instead of an eternal savior
See if we view Jesus as an eternal savior we are admitting that we are in need of a savior
But church that is exactly what Jesus came to do
1 Timothy 1:15 NASB95
15 It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.
This is Paul saying to Timothy
That Christ came into this world to save sinners
That was the purpose of Christ
To give you and I
To give your neighbors
To give your boss
To give that annoying person you all know
The ability to have a personal relationship with Christ
Mark 1:15 NASB95
15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
This is the Gospel Jesus was preaching that salvation had come to the world
Because of what Jesus did on the cross we can have salvation
Not that we do have salvation but that you and I can have salvation
To accept that free gift of salvation Christ Himself says
Repent and believe
Church that has been our battle cry for sometime now
We have always talked about repenting and believing
Often times we get repentance and forgiveness mixed up
We think because God has forgiven us we are good
That is what His death did on the cross
Our sins are forgiven but to accept that forgiveness we must turn from the continuation of sin and turn to God that is what repentance is
To change the course
There is no salvation apart from repentance
Which is why we hone some much are turning from sin
Restoration of fellowship with God, therefore, requires sinful people to forsake their rebellious posture and return to a life of creaturely peace in obedience to the Creator God. Repentance is this act of turning and returning.
Stratis, Justin. “Repentance.” Lexham Survey of Theology. Ed. Mark Ward et al. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2018. Print.
Have you turned from the sin in your life
Have you made a decision in your life to say I an turning from sin and turning to God
Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that God raised Him from the dead
That Jesus was a real person who lived and breathed and ate and walked around on this earth
Do you believe that Jesus died
All seem normal and easily believable
But do you also believe that God the Father raised Him from the Dead
Jesus is no longer dead
Jesus is very much alive this very morning
And Jesus desires that all people come to know Him personally in salvation
Right now this morning
He desires that you repent from your sin this morning and trust Jesus
To trust Jesus is to trust that He is who He says He is and that He did what He said He would do
To trust Jesus is to trust that through Him you can be set free from sin this morning
Church that is the Gospel Message that Jesus came to preach so long ago and it is the same Gospel Message that we still preach today
Acts 2:22–24 NASB95
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
Acts 2:37–38 NASB95
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Peter is giving the same message Jesus gave in Mark 1:15
To repent and trust the Lord that what He did on the cross was salvation
And the beauty of what Jesus did on the cross was final
There is nothing else that needs to be done to be right with God
It’s not Jesus and church membership
It’s not Jesus and tithing
It’s not Jesus and Sunday School
It’s not Jesus and prayer meetings
It is just Jesus
Romans 6:5–7 NASB95
5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin.
That what Jesus did on the cross was final
That if you have done what we talked about this morning
To repent and believe
To turn from sin and run to Jesus
To believe that Jesus defeated death once and for all
And that by accepting that free gift you yourself are free from sin
Praise the Lord church you can be set free this morning
It’s not you repenting
It’s not you believing
It is what Jesus did on the cross and the grave that sets you free
To accept that you repent and believe
As we move to our time of invitation
The band is going to come up
Let me explain to how what the invitation is
See this morning we have shared with you what salvation is
That Jesus taught repentance and faith in Him
That is the only way to Jesus and Jesus is the only way to heaven and to be free from sin
During our invitation if you have never repented from your sin
If you have never believed in Jesus
This is your opportunity to do that this morning
To come up and talk with someone about beginning a personal relationship wtih Jesus
See before each service we go in the back and pray that God would move mightily
And we believe that God has moved this morning
That God maybe calling some of you to join our church here at Marantha
This is your time to come forward and make that decision
That God maybe calling some of you this morning to repent and to believe in Him
To a right relationship with God this morning
And we want to give you an opportunity to respond and do what God has called you to do
The altar is open
