1 Corinthians 10:1-4
1 Corinthians 10:1-4 “For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink.
For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.”
The context of this specific chapter is Paul warning the Corinthians but I wanted to point something out.
Throughout all of scripture their people that point to Christ or are a type of Christ.
For example, Moses.
I am not saying Moses is like Christ but his office and what he did is symbolic to Christ and the cross.
We see events that point to Christ.
Similarly, the deliverance of Israel from the bondage of slavery is pointing to what Christ would accomplish on the cross.
He would deliver us from our slave master which is Sin and Death. it would not be various signs that will do this but the greatest even in human history.
The death and resurrection of Christ.
Baptism is pointing to Christs work on the cross.
Baptism is not what saves.
It is a command.
Just as someone goes in the water symbolizes them sharing in Christs death and as they come up them sharing of his resurrection.
Jesus here is telling us how to make disciples.
We baptize and we teach them all that Jesus commands.
Jesus is also telling us that All Authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him meaning Lee and like many of us did at one point declared the Lordship of Christ in our life.
Third, Jesus is not talking to an individual but to a group.
The command is corporate in nature.
We are to make disciples, we are to baptize we are to teach them.
Since it is corporate in nature the individual is being joined to a family.
The body of Christ.
How by the confession of the individual and the filling of the Holy Spirit.
Today it is Lee’s inauguration as a disciple of Christ.
