Authority by Assignment
WORK factor
The 70 where not the 12 apostles (Luke 10:1)
The 70 were called lambs, not sheep (Luke 10:3; Matt. 10:16)
The 70 were nameless in the Bible, not in the book of life (Luke 10:1; 20)
The 70 were not given authority over demons as the 12 were (Luke 10:1-12).
1. Walking in assignment is where authority is found.
Those who are cast into the work of the Lord will be casting out demons (Luke 10:2).
Don’t look for demons, advance the kingdom of God.
“Demons are subject to us” will be said by those who are submitted to the Lord’s work.
Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7
Jesus acknowledged their authority after they came back from the assignment.
Authority not for renewed mission but simply as disciples.
2. Walking in authority attracts attacks.
We are lambs among wolves [being attacked]. Benjamin is compared to a sweeping wolf. For example, criminal princes (Ex. 22:27); false prophets (Mt. 7:15; Acts 20:29); enemies of God’s people (Mt. 10:16).
Persecution from religion Matthew 10:17
Persecution from government Matthew 10:18
Persecution from family Matthew 10:21-22, 34-36
Persecution from society Matthew 10:22
Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for so did their fathers to the false prophets. Luke 6:26
Before you label everyone attacks you as a wolf make sure you’re acting as a sheep, not a goat.
We are lions among scorpions [doing the attacking]
Tradition teaches that if people speak bad of you that means something is wrong with you.
Tradition teaches that if you will do God’s will the enemy will retaliate.
We are promised rejection from people not retaliation from the devil.
3. Exercising authority diminishes Satan’s influence in our territory.
Legion was out of man but not out of a region. (Matt. 8:31-32; Daniel 10:12)
There are three heavens: “the heavens and the earth” Gen.2:1; “the heavens declare” Ps. 19:1
First heaven - visible. Second heaven - invisible. “the ruler of the kingdom of the air” Eph.2:2, “spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” Eph.6:12; Third heaven - God’s presence. ““caught up to the third heaven….to paradise…” 2Cor.12:2-3
4. Bring Jesus joy by walking in His authority.
God is joyful God
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. 1 Timothy 1:11
The Lord rejoices in His works
May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in His works. Psalm 104:31
The Lord rejoices to do good to His children.
For the LORD will again rejoice over you for good as He rejoiced over your fathers, Deuteronomy 30:9b
Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will assuredly plant them in this land, with all My heart and with all My soul.’ Jeremiah 32:41
The Lord rejoices when person gets saved.
Lost sheep “rejoice with me” Luke 15:6-7; Lost coin “rejoice with me” Luke 15:9; Lost lost “make merry and be glad” Luke 15:32
The Lord will rejoice over Jerusalem
He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
5. The authority of the name of Jesus has been granted exclusively to believers.
“You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” (1 Samuel 17:45).
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; Mark 16:17
Now John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow with us.” Luke 9:49
So I implored Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” Luke 9:40
“We should fight devils not people who fight him.”
Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.”
And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”
Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Acts 19:13, 15-16
The name of Jesus is not a spell or a charm.
The 70 is a key numerical symbol in the Bible.
Seventy nations are listed in (Genesis 10)
Seventy of Jacob’s clan went into Egypt (Exodus 1:5)
Seventy palm trees refreshed God’s people at Elim (Exodus 15:27)
Seventy elders served with Moses (Exodus 24:1)
Seventy princes are mentioned in (Judges 9:56)
Seventy men sat on the council of the Sanhedrin.
Most modern translations have decided in favor of “seventy-two,” based on basic principles for determining manuscript readings. In any case, no doctrinal issue is at stake, and the number probably has symbolic significance representing the number of nations in the world (cf. Genesis 10). The number 72 (or 70) may be meant to signify the Gentile nations, since the table of nations in Ge 10 had 72 names (in the Greek OT; 70 in the Hebrew).
In the United States, state police power comes from the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution, which gives states the rights and powers "not delegated to the United States." States are thus granted the power to establish and enforce laws protecting the welfare, safety, and health of the public.
Depending on state law, impersonating a police officer may be considered either a felony or a misdemeanor.
