Sermon: The anointed Underdog
1st Samuel 16
7-16
16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.
The Lord does not look at the things people look at.
People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel.
But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”9
Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.”
10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.”
11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered.
“He is tending the sheep.”
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12 So he sent for him and had him brought in.
He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this
The anointed underdog
My brother's and my sisters there's a misconception in not just the body of Christ but also in today's society that most successful people are where they are because they were always the favorite.
Because they had everyone support because they where at an advantage.
While this may be true in some cases but there are many successful people who were not the favorite and were the underdog.
In other words they had to face some challenges and go though some difficult seasons.
I came today to talk to the people who can say I am where I am today not because somebody gave me a handout.
Not because every body thought I was the favorite but simplify because I'v worked for it and God anointed me to do it..
I came to speak to the anointed underdog
When we look at the word
un·der·dog it is defined as
a competitor thought to have little chance of winning a fight or contest or a person who has little status in society.
My bothers and my sisters it's easy to be successful when everyone is supporting you it's easy reaching your pontifical when everyone expected you to win but how do you handle when you're the underdog.
Let's just look at the meaning of anointed
The origin of anointing was from a practice of shepherds.
Lice and other insects would often get into the wool of sheep, and when they got near the sheep's head, they could burrow into the sheep's ears and kill the sheep.
So, ancient shepherds poured oil on the sheep's head.
This made the wool slippery, making it impossible for insects to get near the sheep's ears because the insects would slide off.
From this, anointing became symbolic of blessing, protection, and empowerment.
The New Testament Greek words for “anoint” are chrio, which means “to smear or rub with oil” and, by implication, “to consecrate for office or religious service”; Kings 9:6; Ecclesiastes 9:8; James 5:14).
A person was anointed for a special purpose—to be a king, to be a prophet, to be a builder, etc.
Another meaning for the word anointed is "chosen one."
The Bible says that Jesus Christ was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit to spread the Good News and free those who have been held captive by sin (Luke 4:18-19; Acts 10:38).
You could be anointed to do many things some people are anointed to sing, some people are anointed to play music.
Some people are anointed to lead.
Some are anointed to usher anointing is not just preaching
In the previous chapters of 15 we see Samuel was the king of Israel but because he disobeyed God.
The lord had rejected Saul as king of Israel.
And although Samuel has accepted the fact that God had rejected Saul he continued to morn.
But when we get to the 16 chapter God asks Samuel how long will you mourn for Saul being that in have rejected him.
So he sends Samuel down to Jesse house to appoint one of his sons to anointed as king
In this text God anointed David to be king
I come to encourage you that just because use you are not in the front don't mean your not a anointed.
Just because you are not the on the flyers doesn't mean that your not anointed.
How do you handle when your anointed but your not on the top off everyone's list.
How do you handle when your anointed but your not voted most likely to succeed
How do you handle when you're anointed but you don't have call position or a title
I come to encourage you that the anointing is not in the title.
But the anointing lies in the person carrying the title.
David was anointed as king before he became king..
Your already anointed to do what is wants
You to but sometimes God has to mold us to get there.
You may fail at something but get you
And keep pressing because your still anointed
Just because you have failed at somethings does not mean that you are not anointed.
.Many successful people did not start off where they were for example:
Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star because his editor felt he "lacked imagination and had no good ideas."
Oprah Winfrey was publicly fired from her first television job as an anchor in Baltimore for getting "too emotionally invested in her stories."
Colonel Harland David Sanders was fired from dozens of jobs before founding a fried chicken empire.
These people were not thought to succeed but they succeeded anyhow
As we get to the text
We find here in 1 Samuel 16 -10 the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou m or n over Saul..
I have provided me a king--The language is remarkable, and intimates a difference between this and the former king.
Samuel goes to Jesse house ansd Jesse Calls son after son
6-10.
Samuel said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him--Here Samuel, in consequence of taking his impressions from the external appearance, falls into the same error as formerly
.
11.
There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep--
Jesse having evidently no idea of David's wisdom and bravery, spoke of him as the most unfit.
God, in His providence, so ordered it, that the appointment of David might the more clearly appear to be a divine purpose, and not the design either of Samuel or Jesse.
David having not been sanctified with the rest of his family, it is probable that he returned to his pastoral duties the moment the special business on which he had been summoned was done.
12. he was ruddy,
13.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him--
There may be some one here today who can say like David I know that God have call me out.
While everyone else is doing their own thing when you try to what everyone else is doing you just don't feel right..
.
That S because the anointing is on your life God have you separated for a purpose.
Because you are a king.
When God has anointed you to be kings you can't just hang with anybody.
Many of us can't understand why.
People are looking us over.
Why were are not getting reconnecting.
But God's says because your heart is in the right place.
He is going to anointed you in due season.
Many people hear the story of David and how he slayed Goliath.
But they don't talk about how he was looked over.
There maybe one that can say I'm like David but I know in due season it S going to happen we want you to come today.
