Angelic Visit

Zechariah had a visit from Gabriel when he was performing his priestly duties in the temple

told of him being a father

because Elizabeth is barren and she has born the shame of being without children

her family and friends are looking down on her because of the sin she must have done to displease God

to have God not give her the gift of a child

AND curse her

but they prayed and God sent an angel to give the good news

John the son will be a forerunner of the Messiah

V 23-25 Elizabeth is 6 months pregnant

now God is going to send Gabriel to another

this time it is a teen age girl named Mary

Gabriel one of the 7 archangels

also known as the watchers

one of the 2 named Michael

ones who watch over man, bring messages from God

Gabriel brought a message to Daniel

to Zechariah now to Mary

coming to Nazareth

Galilee was considered unclean because of the gentiles that lived there

and the small town of Nazareth was considered even worse than that

the wrong side of the tracks

only white trash live there

And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see!”

There lived Mary a Virgin, legally betrothed to Joseph

the families have gotten together and arranged the marriage

the father of the groom has paid the agreed dowry

it was a marriage in name, with a divorce as the only way out

and if she would get pregnant it was that she was cheating on him

in that case she could be thrown out of town, stoned to death

great shame would come to the family and herself

A girl is this position has one goal right now ---

Be prepared for and watching for her groom to come

Then in an instant her life was changed

God has changed her life in an instant

Mary’s Willingness

I am your slave

I am willing to put my life on the line for you

I am willing to be an unwed, teen mother living in shame for you

I am willing to live in deep poverty for you

I am willing to give up everything I have dreamed for all my life

Mary in an instant said yes to God

no thinking it over

no saying comeback tomorrow I’ll give you an answer

after a couple of clarifying questions the answer is yes

use me for your honor and glory

that leads us to

Mary’s Faith

Did she know the prophecy about a virgin having a baby?

Isaiah 7:14 LEB

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look! the virgin is with child and she is about to give birth to a son, and she shall call his name ‘God with us.’

Did she and her friends talk about this and wonder will it be me?

the Angel of God is with her and telling her you are this Virgin

and her response is I trust in my Lord

no matter what comes

I know that it will no be easy but I trust in you, lord

Faith does not see the future good or bad

faith puts your life into someone else hands

in this case

her trust is in the sovereign Lord

Her task is to have this Baby

and to raise this child as she would any other

let God work out the details

for instance

God sent the angel to Joseph and explained everything to him

Joseph probably loved her even more

they needed to go to Egypt to protect the child

wise men from the east came to their home and brought the finance for the trip

steps forward trusting in the Almighty to guide them, and supply all of her needs

Faith is not just taking a leap into the darkness

but trusting in the promises and character of the Almighty
