fingerprints
-We’re working through our fingerprints series
-and we’re reading the book of Genesis in a very new and very different way.
-So last week we looked at the fall of creation.
and we talked about how adam is a type or a pattern of Jesus
-and how Eve represents the bride of christ, she represents the church
-And the week before that we looked at the seven days of creation and all of the ways in which that points us to Christ
-And something very important occured to me over the past few weeks
-and I just thought I would take a moment here and clear things up for a bit
-And here’s what i want to clear up
-Especially as we’re going through and making these connections and reading the old testament in a completely different way that we normally would
-And that is this:
-When we talk about something in the Old testament “representing” something or someone in the New testament
-so for example when I say that eve “represents” the church
-or that Adam “represents” Christ
-Or like we talked about two weeks ago
-That God rested on the seventh day
-that’s in a way pointing us to Jesus Resting in the tomb on the seventh day
-All of these fingerprints, all of these signs pointing us to Jesus
-And we make these connections and talk about how they represent something else
-Do not take that as an indication that the original thing didn’t happen
-I want to say that one more time more clearly
-Just because something in the Old testament “represents” something in the new
-That does not mean that the original thing wasn’t a real event
-See when you and I tell a story and it’s a metphorical story where one thing represents the other
-it’s always a fictional story because we can only provide meaning to things we create
-in other words if we tell a story, we have created those character in the story, we’ve invneted them, and that’s why we can say that this thing represents something else
-I can’t tell you the story about Geroge Washington crossing the Delaware, and then decide that George Washington actually is a symbol of something else
-because I didn’t come up with the story, and because it’s a real story.
-But thing that’s different about God’s story
-Is that he created the book, and he also created the real people that the book talks about
-God is the author of human life, and he has created a story with real people and real events
-And any good story has a moral
-I am convinced after reading God’s book
-that the moral of the story is Jesus
-The point of the whole story is Jesus
-And it’s not just the book, it’s the real world that the book tells us about
-So I want to take a minute today and look at The account of noah and flood, and see how it points us to Jeus
-If you have your bible
Genesis 6:9-13
Now I want to point out something here
-In the chapter right before this, where we get the geneology between Adam and Noah
-I did y’all a favor and and took the liberty adding up all of those ages and dates for you
-Because look it’s sunday, and y’all didn’t come to church to do math.
-so you’re welcome
But from the time of Adam until the time of Noah is about 1600 years
-1600 years between when Adam walked with God, and God finally decides that enough is enough
-So lest you think that God is rash or impatient, or vengeful
-Remember God gave us almost 2 millenia to get right with him
-And one other thing I want to point out
-Look at the ages in chapter five
-930 years, 912 years, 905 years
-So even though God had said to adam
-You may no longer eat from tree of life and live forever
-Out of his mercy and kindness he still chose to extend their lives
-It’s not forever, but a thousand years is nothing to sneeze at
-From the very begining God has been giving us gifts that we don’t deserve
-So don’t think that god is somehow being rash, or unreasonable
-By sending Judgement on the earth
-He gave plenty of time.
-And even still today he’s giving us plenty of time
-Because we know that at some point he’s going to come back
-By my count, it’s been approximately 1988 years, 6 months, 13 days, and 11 hours since Jesus’ death on the cross
-give or take a little depending on how you factor the timezone difference between here and Jerusalem
-That’s 1988 years that God has waited for us patiently
-And I know as Christians we sometimes fall into the trap of wanting Christ’s return to come soon
-But every day you wake up and you don’t hear trumpets in the sky and you don’t see a big white sky horse riding in on the clouds
-Well that’s just one more day that God has given you to spread the gospel
-And if you’re not on board with the whole Jesus thing
-Well then that’s one more day God has given you to turn to him to find life
-But the interesting thing that comes out of those ages
-is that even though 1600 years have passed
-We get a lot of overlap in the generations
-So by the time Noah’s father Lamech was born
-Adam was still alive
-Think about the ramifications of that
In the days when the people were wicked and corrupted and turned their backs on God
-Adam…the same adam who lived in paradise with God was still alive walking around
-You don’t think any of those people ever talked to Adma
-you don’t think the conversation ever came up?
-How is it possible for a generation to become so corrupt and fall so far from God while the people who literally walked with him in the garden are still alive to give a first hand account of God’s glory?
-Now that’s easy for us to say
-But how many of you here have Grandchildren?
-Adam had the choice to pass along the information to his kids and grand kids
-He knew where he had sinned, he knew what God wanted.
-But apparently he didn’t pass that knowledge along very well
-We don’t have the luxury of 900 year life spans to pass on the faith to the 10th generation
-We get two.
Maybe three if you’re lucky enough to have great grand kids
-That’s it.
-And if our faith isn’t passed on to our kids and grandkids
-We’re setting them up for failure.
-Because even though God has promised that he will destroy all evil once and for all
-He’s also provided us with an out
-Here’ an interesting thing about the hebrew language
-The phrase there “coat it with pitch” literally just means “cover it with a covering”
-Because in the hebrew language the context of what you’re talking about determines what the actual meaning of the word is
-So in this case we know we’re talking about a flood and a boat
-And so the know the covering is some sort of water-proofer, like pitch.
-But what’s intersting is that that same phrase “cover it with a covering”
