John 19:16–37 ESV
So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

The Love of God

ensured his mother was cared for
John 19:25–27 ESV
but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
kept not by his fleshly brothers but his spiritual ones
Witnessed to the two beside himself
Luke 23:39–43 ESV
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
He offers comfort to this man in the midst of his own suffering
Finally the very reason for Jesus death was to bring peace between Man and God that we might be restored to a right relationship with Him.
Thus he died that we might live with God what great love Jesus shows on the cross

The Fulfillment of Scripture

John leaves out many details of Jesus Crucifixion that we find in the other Gospels but instead hones in on his fulfillment of Scripture, namely those that prophesied his death.
1st the guards divided his cloths and gambled for his tunic
John 19:24 ESV
so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,
fullfillment of Psalm 22:18
Psalm 22:18 ESV
they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
This was often done in the case of Criminals the executioners got to keep their possesions. Thus Jesus would die a criminals death
2nd they gave him sour wine for his thirst
John 19:28 ESV
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”
fulfills Psalm 69:21
Psalm 69:21 (ESV)
and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
Psalm 69 speaks much of the psalmists enemies doing evil to him and of their great hatred and the sour wine given to the thirst was a cruel joke for it would not have satisfied thirst but rather made you more thirsty.
3rd
When the soldiers were told to break the legs of the crucified so they would die before sunset. They came to Jesus and determined he was already dead so they did not break his legs.
John 19:33 ESV
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
This was fulfillment of Psalm 34:19-20
Psalm 34:19–20 ESV
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.
Again Jesus fulfills prophecy. This one is important for the body of the sacrificial lamb must be perfect without blemish and a broken bone would have been a defective sacrifice and thereby a unqualified one. Yet Jesus was whole.
Lastly He was pierced with the spear
John 19:34 ESV
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
This is fulfillment of Zechariah 12:10
Zechariah 12:10 ESV
“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
Here John shows that the Messiah would be pierced and so by bring grace and mercy to all of Israel. This is indeed what Christ does for by his death Israel and all of us may have grace and mercy from God if we but acknowledge him as Lord of our lives and accept his death as the sacrifice for our sins that we might be made righteous through his blood before the holy God.
Thus John shows with these four prophecies that Jesus is indeed the Messiah and the one and only acceptable sacrifice for our sins.

It is finished

Jesus knowing all this to be the case issues his last words prior to his death. It is finished.
John 19:30 ESV
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Notice that Jesus is in complete control here. He ensures that everything has been done His mother is cared for. He has met all the prophecies. He has accomplished all the Father asked of him then he says It is Finished
He does not merely collapse and die but rather he bows his head as though in a final act of submission and worship before God. Then he willingly gives up his spirit. Nobody takes the life of the lamb rather he lays it down willingly.
Roman soldiers were used to fighting the condemned every step of the way of them resisting the nails them resisting death and pain yet here is Jesus submitting to it like no one else before or after.
I imagine the other two men had to be thrown onto the cross lashed down and held in place while a man stood over them and drove the nails into place. Not Jesus. No I picture Jesus walking calmly to the cross and stretching out his arms as if to say I love you this much. Looking the soldier in the eye as if to say I am ready. He does not pull away from the nail but rather he lays still submissive to the end. when he bows his head and says Father It is finished I am coming home.
As Jesus Dies Matthew 27:51 says
Matthew 27:51 ESV
And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
Thus with his death Jesus destroys the barrier between man and the presence of God. No longer will man need a priest to intercede for him rather he can now come himself into the presence of God. Jesus has made the way open to the throne. Praise the Lamb who was slain. Glory to Jesus. Our sins are forgiven and we can know God as we are known.
