I. How Men Are to Pray in Church
I. How Men Are to Pray in Church
8 Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.
The Letters to Timothy and Titus (A. Instructions on Worship (2:1–15)) Robert Yarbrough
“Lifting up holy hands” evokes a repeated OT image of godly men imploring God with outstretched arms:271 Aaron (Lev 9:22), Ezra and the people (Neh 8:6), David (Pss 28:2; 63:4; 141:2). Of Jesus, Luke records, “When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them” (Luke 24:50).
Aaron
22 Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them, and he stepped down after making the sin offering and the burnt offering and the peace offerings.
Ezra
6 Then Ezra blessed the Lord the great God. And all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands; then they bowed low and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
David
2 Hear the voice of my supplications when I cry to You for help, When I lift up my hands toward Your holy sanctuary.
Jesus
50 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
without wrath and dissension? True worship cannot happen when conflict between people is present.
23 “Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.
II. What Women Should Wear in Church
II. What Women Should Wear in Church
9 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,
10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.
16 Moreover, the Lord said, “Because the daughters of Zion are proud And walk with heads held high and seductive eyes, And go along with mincing steps And tinkle the bangles on their feet,
17 Therefore the Lord will afflict the scalp of the daughters of Zion with scabs, And the Lord will make their foreheads bare.”
18 In that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, headbands, crescent ornaments,
19 dangling earrings, bracelets, veils,
20 headdresses, ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, amulets,
21 finger rings, nose rings,
22 festal robes, outer tunics, cloaks, money purses,
23 hand mirrors, undergarments, turbans and veils.
24 Now it will come about that instead of sweet perfume there will be putrefaction; Instead of a belt, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, a plucked-out scalp; Instead of fine clothes, a donning of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty.
III. What Women Should Say in Church
III. What Women Should Say in Church
11 A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness.
12 But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.
quietly - not taking on a teaching role.
submissiveness - not taking on a leadership role.
John MacArthur
Elisabeth Elliot, who most of us know as a marvelous instrument of God in the expansion of the Kingdom, the wonderful wife of the martyred Jim Elliot. After the massacre of her husband and the several other missionaries in Ecuador, she was the only biblically trained person left who could speak the Auca language, the only one left. But so convinced was Elizabeth Elliot in her heart that she could not violate the Word of God that she took one of the Auca men and weekly taught that man a sermon so that he could preach it in the church on the Lord’s day. Much like Aquila and Priscilla, she would not step up to the preaching but she did not mind instructing the preacher.
IV. A Woman’s Order in the Church
IV. A Woman’s Order in the Church
13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.
14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
When women step out on their own, they are stepping out of their God given design and are in danger.
Men and women are equal in sin natures and in ability to be tempted, its just that because of the roles that God has designed for us, we are each tempted in different ways.
Women are tempted to take over for men thus disregarding God’s authority.
Men are tempted to give over their authority to women thus disregarding God’s authority.
8 For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man;
9 for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake.
V. What a Woman’s Responsibility is in the Church
V. What a Woman’s Responsibility is in the Church
15 But women will be preserved through the bearing of children if they continue in faith and love and sanctity with self-restraint.
11 However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
12 For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God.
