All Pumpkins Look Different

Pumpkins come in all different shapes, sizes, and colors. On the outside, all pumpkins are unique in one way or the other.
All people look different on the outside. Some are tall and some are short. Some thicker and some skinnier. Some have brown hair and others blonde. Some have blue eyes while others have green eyes.

Cut Off The Top Of The Pumpkin

Regardless of how a pumpkin looks on the outside, they all have one thing in common. When you cut off the top of the pumpkin, they have the same stuff on the inside. They are filled with pulp/guts and seeds. When you are carving a pumpkin, you have to cut off the top and get this stuff out.
All people, regardless of how they look on the outside, have the same stuff on the inside. We all have sin in our lives.
When you go to clean out your pumpkin, you have to take your hands and dig this stiff out. If you have ever done that, you know how ooey, gooey, and sticky that stuff is. It is slimy and sticky. It is also hard to get off.
This sin that is inside of us is like that ooey, gooey pulp that is inside of a pumpkin. Sin is sticky and slimy. When you allow a sinful act to become a habit in your life, it is so hard to get rid of that sin. It just seems to hang on and never let go, no matter how hard you try to change it.
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Cleaning The Pumpkin

You and I both know that no pumpkin can remove the guts from itself. That pumpkin needs help from someone like you and me to help it get that mess out of there.
We cannot remove the sin from our own lives. Like the pumpkin, we too need someone outside of ourselves to help remove the ooey, gooey sin from our lives.
1 John 1:9 ESV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Carving The Pumpkin

After you clean the pumpkin out, you carve a happy image into the side of it. When you are done carving your pumpkin, that pumpkin does not even look anything like it did before. It looks like a whole new pumpkin.
God does the same thing with us when we devote our lives to Him. When we put our trust in Jesus, He begins to do something inside of us that changes who we are. We begin to act differently, talk differently, and just be different people. God makes us better and more faithful to Him, by showing us a better way of living life.
Romans 12:2 ESV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Putting A Light In The Pumpkin

When we are done cleaning and carving the pumpkin, it is time to put it outside on display so that others can see it. We usually stick a light inside of it so that people driving by can see the creation that we made. That light simply makes the image on that pumpkin pop so that others can see it clearly.
As God begins to change us, He puts His light inside of us to showcase His work. He shows others what a wonderful He job in your life by putting that light inside of you. As that light shines, people can see the creation that God made as they pass by. It is so beautiful that it makes them want that light too.
Matthew 5:14 ESV
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Matthew 5:16 ESV
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
1 John 1:7 NKJV
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
