Review & Overview

1. Previous Study’s Review

Paul said back in chp.7:1 now concerning the things of which you wrote to me… So the Corinthians had many questions for Paul.
Chp.7: Marriage… then in, Chp.8-10: Food offered to Idols… & our Christian Liberty…
chp.8: We looked at the Problem & the Solution to the Problem:
chp.9: We looked at Paul’s Authority to deal with the Problem:
chp.10: We looked at the Examples regarding the Problem:
In all of that we saw that no matter what we do or where we go or what say, we should Bring Glory to God…

2. Current Study’s Overview

Now in Chp.11: 2 more questions: 1. Worship Services involving Men & Woman. & 2. Communion.
It’s a section dealing w/ Order & Structure in the Church.
Today we’ll look at the 1st question dealing with Worship Services: where Paul deals with Head Coverings… read.
Paul uses the cultural principle of Head Coverings to drive home an important point about the Divine Order between Men & Woman… Not only in the Church Setting… but also in the Marriage Setting…
He also points out a great truth that Hierarchy & Equality are not mutually exclusive terms…
If you’re taking notes 4 things we want to look at as it pertains to Paul & the Corinthians…

1. He Pours out Praise on Them V.s. 2

Praise: epaineeho, 6 times, to approve… to commend… he commends them for 2 reasons:
They Remembered Paul: back in chp.10:33 - vs.1 Paul said…
They remembered that everything Paul did, said & ate was done in light of getting people saved…
They Kept the Traditions of Paul Vs. 2c - traditions: paradosis, 13, to give over to others…
In this case it speaks of Paul’s teachings… not some kind of tradition like the Jews have but the Word of God we would say…
While Paul praises them for keeping his word or his teachings… they weren’t perfect…
they began to slip back into their old ways… & reinstate the their old customs…
APPLICATION: This is a good word for us… to Remember the Teachings & Keep the Teachings in the Word of God…

2. He Points out a Principle to Them Vs. 3

Head: hierarchy… prominence… authority… & with Authority comes Submission… 3 examples:
a) Church Vs. 3a: the head of every man is Christ… speaking of mankind, men & women in the church…
Ephesians 5:23 NKJV
23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
This is His church
APPLICATION: And you know sometimes people come to the church and they want to make the Church fit to their mold.
Since it’s His church we need to Submit to His Authority…
James 4:7 NKJV
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
We are to submit to God and how He operates and wants things to go, especially regarding His church.
b) Marriage Vs. 3b: the head of women is man… he is not saying that all men are over all women, obviously…
Ephesians 5:23 NKJV
23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
So there is hierarchy in the marriage relationship…
Men, that speaks of the leadership role we play as husbands… leading our wives spiritually…
being the ones who say, let’s go to church… let’s serve at the church… let’s pray for the church…
Future Wives, with authority comes Submission:
Ephesians 5:22 NKJV
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
1 Peter 3:1 NKJV
1 Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives,
Colossians 3:18 NKJV
18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Now obviously if they tell you to something immoral or illegal you say no way, I’m not doing it…
Now Hierarchy & Equality are not mutually exclusive terms:
Galatians 3:28 NKJV
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
c) God Vs. 3c: The head of Christ is God… turn 1 Cor.15:27-28… because there is hierarchy in the Triunity of the God Head…
1 Corinthians 15:27–28 NKJV
27 For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28 Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.
Understand, God the Father, God the Son, & God the Holy Spirit are 1 being but 3 persons.
Each having their own ministry or work if you will.
Jesus is God, the Bible teaches it.
Titus 2:13 NKJV
13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
Isaiah 9:6 NKJV
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
2 Peter 1:1 NKJV
1 Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
Romans 9:5 NKJV
5 of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.
John 10:33 NKJV
33 The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.”
1 John 5:20 NKJV
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
Ya say I don’t understand the trinity… Good because if you did you’d be God…
it’s something we can only apprehend because the Bible teaches it… we can never fully comprehend it…
1. He Pours out Praise on them. 2. He Points out a Principle to them. 3. He Presents the Purpose for them: vs.4-15
