The corn maze

I love that Paul ended with him naming this friends. He begins with unity lays the ground work theologically and ends with his friends.
In this chapter roughly about 35
names where mentioned.
Priscilla, Aquila, Epaenetus, Mary, Andronicus, Junia
This people where very close to Paul these people .
- Some of these people hosted the church in there own homes.
- Paul said Rufus was chosen in the Lord and his mother was like a mother to him.
Apuila and Priscilla, risk there own necks for Paul.
These people suffered with Paul in the ministry. Nothing can bond a people closer then suffering in the Lord together.
Paul was going through great hardship but all he could think about was these names.
Paul at times was shipwrecked, stoned, beaten, prisoned but yet he had these people on his mind.
These names they had faces to them.
When you think about names what comes to mind?
Maybe anger
Maybe love
Maybe security
Maybe insecurity
Maybe jealous
Maybe lust
Maybe humility
Maybe disappointment.
unmet expectations
pity brokenness
Humor
Maybe we think about a memory “When I was at my worst this person took me in.”
This person fed me when I was hungry.
Now lets flip it on its head when people think about your how would they perceive you.
Galatians 5:19 NKJV
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,
Galatians 5:20 NKJV
idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,
Or is my life a representation of this
Galatians 5:22–24 NKJV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Or loving ,patient, kind, Spirit controlled, peaceful.
Romans 16:16 NKJV
Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you.
In the early church ritual kissing was apart of a greeting , practices of prayer, the Eucharist ( communion ) and baptism. It was used in connection with funerals and vows.
Ritual kissing signified a altered perception of kinship within early Christian communities.
It was a holy kiss, not an unholy kiss. As far as greeting is concerned its the equivalent of a hung or a solid hand shake.
In the Graeco- Roman world, the ritual kiss was on the lips, and wasn’t holy.
Greet one another with a holy kiss
1 Cor 16:20 “All the brethren greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss.”
2 Cor 13:12 “Greet one another with a holy kiss.”
1 Thess 5:26 “Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.”
Peter said greet one another with a kiss of love
1 Peter 5:14 “Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.”
love- agape - which is Gods unconditional love. A self sacrificial love. Arose which is a sexual love.
It provided a communal representation of kinship in order to strengthen the bonds between early Christians.
Sometimes we brush aside the level of unity amongst the early church.
There wasn’t no church hopping. Or I can just easily find another church. They where family and treated it as such.
The new church has become cold. We can forget about the value and level of vulnerability thats required for fellowship and unity.
Maybe the practice of the holy kiss won’t be reintroduced but the principle still reigns true.
The principle is the bond we have with one another.
David loved Jonathan as he loved his own soul.
1 Sam. 20:17 “Now Jonathan again caused David to vow, because he loved him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.”
Jonathan was willing even to defy his own father for his brother and friend David.
Jonathan literally saved Davids life from his father Saul .
David was so close to Jonathan that after his death David promised him that he would take care of his offspring and so he did.
Even in death David went out and found Jonathans son Mephibosheth. and gave him servants and property.
David was so loyal in 2 Sam. 19- He even spared Mephibosheth’s life when there was reasonable suspicion that he participated in a revolt against David
Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss and he still called him friend.
Matthew 26:48–50 NKJV
Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.” Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. But Jesus said to him, “Friend, why have you come?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.
The kiss that was suppose to be for as bond Judas used it to betray Jesus.
Judas betrayed Jesus and He still called Him friend.
We betray Jesus in almost every way and He still calls us friends.
Psalm 2:12 NKJV
Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
Kiss could be a sign of love among spouses , Or of religious adoration in worshippers.
A kiss you to be a pure then but this pure thing was deflected and became a depraved thing by carnal man.
We are the Bride of Christ. Allot of men don’t like being called the Bride and Christ is the Groom.
The Son must first kiss us by His mercy and we kiss him by our piety.
Psalm 85:10 “Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed.”
