The Last Supper
The Last Supper
17 Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”
18 And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ”
19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
20 When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve.
6 Therefore say to the children of Israel: ‘I am the Lord; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
Aspects of the Seder Passover Meal:
Redeemer and Deliverer
There was 15 steps to the passover meal
Included 4 cups of wine
Unleavened bread
39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they had brought out of Egypt; for it was not leavened, because they were driven out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared provisions for themselves.
Exodus:
430 years of slavery
Generations of only knowing one way of living
And in a moments notice everything changes
Bread:
7 Hebrew words referencing bread
3 Greek words
mentioned 492 in the bible
It was a staple food for in biblical times
1. Trust and Obedience
This is going to be like the food you were used to eating
This is going to be the a bread of freedom.
8 And you shall tell your son in that day, saying, ‘This is done because of what the Lord did for me when I came up from Egypt.’
2. God’s provision
1 And they journeyed from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they departed from the land of Egypt. 2 Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 And the children of Israel said to them, “Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. 5 And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”
Look what I had to give up!
Daily reliance on God
3. God’s presence
30 And you shall set the showbread on the table before Me always.
In the tabernacle had show bread
12 loaves of unleavened bread
Had to made a specific way
Could only be eaten by the priest who were sanctified
The show bread to some literally were pierced cakes
They had holes put in them to cook throughly
4. Represents Healing
22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed.”
23 But He answered her not a word.
And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”
24 But He answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”
26 But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”
27 And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
5. Represents the body of Jesus
32 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
The wine
Represents abundance
10 So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.
11 Binding his donkey to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine,
He washed his garments in wine,
And his clothes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes are darker than wine,
And his teeth whiter than milk.
There’s going to be abundance in the midst of a drought
So much that you you can tie your donkey to it and wash your clothes in it
Amos 9- talks about the son of Judah coming and the overflowing of abundance
Joel 3 talks about the mountains dripping with wine also
2. Jesus’ first miracle
Changing water into wine marked a significant change in Jesus’ life
Jesus’ baptism/holy spirit
Wedding at Cana
His family is there to witness him transitioning into his messianic position
3. His blood of the new covenant
27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29 But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”
His blood that is shed for the remission of sins
A blood that is once in for all in place for the remission of our sins
A covering for us so we can have a relationship with the most high God
4. The wine represents our union with Jesus
Seder passover had 4 cups that were passed around
Cup of Sanctification
Jewish marriage proposal
Offering of the wine to his bride
Jesus offers the same cup to us
Drinking this cup meant that the disciples agreed to be set apart
That we are betrothed
Legally binding contract
Mary and Joseph
The man would no longer drink from the vine until the wedding day
When the bride would drink she would rememeber
2. Cup of Redemption
The brides Father would set a price in trade for his daughter
usually it was something of high value
The price of sin had to be paid for our lives
Jesus was willing to pay that price
10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,
3. Cup of Plagues
The final plague being the death of the firstborn if not for the blood
He became the final lamb
and took the sins and plagues of the world upon him
Jesus said if it all possible let this cup pass from me
never the less he paid that price
4. The cup of completion
The fourth cup was poured but not consumed until a later day
it marked the end of the celebration
Completion of the festival
Some people put out a cup for the prophet Elijah in order to help usher in the messiah
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” 29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Communion:
The marriage proposal
2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
He put a place holder on our lives (his Bride or the church)
if we chose to except it
1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
We can play our part
We can’t forget who we put our names to
It’s a life for life exchange
20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
We’ve entered a union with God through Jesus
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
