humans have a fallen nature, a sinful nature.
small children example
don’t have to limit it to children, look at the world and the way things are around here
God wants to know us
God actually cares about us
“we love Him because He first loved us”
“God commendeth His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”
“God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved through Him”
some people don’t realize this, and just think God hates them for whatever reason - EXPLAIN
some just simply have no idea about God at all
some people just don’t care and take it for granted
nobody could ever love you as much as God loves you
human love could never compare
imagine having the God of the universe who’s done so much for you caring about you so much that He’d send His Son to die on the cross and you just cast it off
what a travesty this is, look at what you’re missing out on
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
lets go through this a bit at a time
he’s talking about how your life can be transformed with the help of Christ, how you can change from being one way to being another way
don’t forget, we all have this sinful nature, so we all need salvation and change
you can’t just say, “Oh I don’t need to change I’m just fine”
v22 - He says to put off the former “conversation”, which means “conduct” in this older english
He’s saying to put off the old conduct of the old man - the old life, person
He says the old man is corrupt because of deceitful lusts, sinful desires
many times, you may have a desire to do something wrong, and when you do it, it’s not as great as you thought it was going to be
so then you’re in a situation where you’ve done wrong for no real reason
look at what drugs can do to people, they really suck people in
v23 - “be renewed in the spirit of your mind”
When we turn to Jesus, when we believe in Him and ask God to save us, He starts working in our life
this verse is essentially saying “ and have your mind made new by Christ”
example of saul -> paul
example of david wood (if new people)
my example - drug abuse, attitude, depression, hope for life, motivation, etc.
put off old man -> mind renewal -> put on new man
IT STARTS INSIDE
we change from the inside out, and we need Christ for that change
v24 - “put on the new man...”
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
we already saw that when we decide to go with God He will renew us on the inside
we see here that if any man is a believer, he’s a new creature, a new man
old things are passed away, our sins are forgiven, we can leave behind all the baggage of our old life
God can help us work through our flaws, and take us from the gutter and make us completely new
you know you can have a little play-doh man and he looks one way, but you can take that same play-doh and make him into a completely different man
this is what God can do for us if we trust in Him and follow Him
At the end of the day, it’s a heart issue - you have to be right on the inside, because the inside controls the outside
God knows your heart, and He knows where you’re really at, the inner you is the one that God deals with
This whole thing of being made new, putting off the old man, the old person, and putting on the new is what being born again means
it’s a new chance at life, you are a new person, your mind will be renewed
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
God didn’t have to do what He did for us, He didn’t have to care about us or for us, but He does
how will we respond to that love?
He can make you new from the inside out, turn you from one way to another easily because Jesus says with God, all things are possible.
the Bible tells us that the peace of God passes all understanding
Ultimately, as people who are naturally sinful, natural wrongdoers, we’re on our way to be punished if we don’t accept Christ
He took the punishment for us, and if we just believe in and follow Him,
He will make us new, He will forgive our sins, He will give us hope, He will lead us in life
Jesus says He’ll be with you always, that He’ll never leave you nor forsake you
so what are you going to do? are you going to just stay your naturally sinful self and stay on the road to punishment?
or will you accept the free love of God, His offer to forgive your sin, His offer to change you, to be with you, to bring you peace, to give you heaven!
