Pray for me!!!

We talk about this before, “pastor pray for me!!!!”
we ask each other to pray for our matters, worries or concerns
as prayer life is a topic that we as a church must confront in the future, we get a chance to study a special prayer
a prayer that some would say is the most important text of all scripture
this is the most important prayer in all text of scripture
a theologan would say that it is possible that a man can spend his entire lifetime in this chapter alone meditating and studying this text and still fail at getting to the true understanding and purity of the text.
We get a chance here to see Jesus pray to the Father.
This is not the same as the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6. Or Luke 11.
Jesus is showing them how to pray
here Jesus is praying to the Father
when did Jesus pray?
mountain (mt 14:23
Prayed with crying. (heb 5:7)
this prayer is the ultimate prayer of the Son’s obedience to the Father.
Jesus is about to perform the ultimate act of obedience (going to the cross)
This pray is divided into parts. The first part is Jesus praying for Himself.

Part 1

John 17:1–5 NASB95
1 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, 2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. 3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 “I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. 5 “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
John 17:1 NASB95
1Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,
Jesus started to pray.
After all that he shared with His disciples Jesus starts to pray.
In the Bible times it was Customary to lift up one’s eyes in prayer.
We see this in Psalm 123:1
Psalm 123:1 NASB95
1To You I lift up my eyes, O You who are enthroned in the heavens!
John 11:41 NASB95
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
We even see that in Luke 18, where the tax Collector does not even lift up his eyes to heaven (v.13)
In our western ways of doing things, we are familiar with bowing our heads and closing our eyes to pray.
and although this is something that we are Familiar with it is not something that is biblically backed.
So Jesus lifts up His eyes in prayer.
and He says, “Father the hour has now come.”
Let us not forget that at the wedding in Cana, Jesus told his mother that His hour had not yet come (2:4)
We here this statement many times throughout the gospel. (4:21, 5:28, 7:30, 8:20)
The hour that He is talking about is the time when Jesus will be the great and perfect sacrifice for the redemption of the human race.
Jesus also says:
“glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You.”
To glorify - does not just mean to extol, or to praise.
but there was more to it. It’s meaning is to “share in the Devine glory”
This glory is in the death of Christ.
This has been a plan since the beginning.
Jesus by dying on the cross, Him and the Father will be glorified because the plan of redemption has finally has finally taken place.
John 17:2 NASB95
2even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.
Jesus prays to the Father the truth that authority over all flash was and is always His. His authority is also of those who the Father has given (believers)
with that power, authority, control, He has given them eternal life.
“Evan as…..”
The Greek word is (Ka-thos) which translates to “Just as”
so Jesus says:
glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, just as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.
Jesus prays:
Glorify your Son (with the purpose) that the Son will glorify you (the Father)
Jesus is granted authority over all people (with the purpose) that He might give eternal life to those who are in the Father.
John 17:3 NASB95
3“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
This eternal life is a way of life.
This life on know God, knowing Jesus Christ, knowing Holy Spirit.
Knowing God.
To enter into the full, saving, intimate, and complete communion with God.
John 17:4 NASB95
4“I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.
Jesus has brought glory to God the Father,
because he a has accomplished the perfect life, obeying of all the law, and taught the true gospel.
His miracles and wonders that He showed.
Also He is about the be the sacrificial Lamb (John 1:29)
The assignment was given, Jesus accomplished it all (to complete, bring to an end)
completed his earthy ministry
the end of war with man and God.
The beginning of hope for the redemption of sin
Jesus had completed all, but there was one more thing left………The cross
John 17:5 NASB95
“Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
Jesus ask for His glory to be restored
Jesus is going to be restore from His earthly body to His face to face union with Father and Holy spirit
this return is needed for the Holy Spirit to come
which will lead to the spreading of the Gospel and the forming and establishing of His church.
we see here the preexistence of the Son before the beginning
remember John 1:1
John 1:1 NASB95
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
also John 8:58
John 8:58 NASB95
58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
Plus Jesus as asking something of God, that God said was going to happen
Remember:
John 12:28 NASB95
28 “Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
When Jesus to the Father to glorify Him to the same this it was before,
understand that Jesus going to the cross, its going to give God glory,
because Him going to the cross will bring salvation for His people , ending the war between man and God.
a people that are full of sin, filth, and decaying through and through,
Jesus going to the cross will end that, were His people will to clean and holy before Him, without sin. But spotless
All because of what Jesus has and is doing,
ALL GLORY TO GOD!!!!!!!!!!
