And notice that here, as there, the point is not to say, ‘Fancy! Despite the fact that he had come from God, he nevertheless washed their feet!’ The point is to say, ‘No: washing their feet was what he had to do, precisely because he had come from God.’ The footwashing—and the crucifixion itself, to which it pointed—was Jesus’ way of showing who God was and is.
N. T. Wright
Foot-washing was a servant’s task and not something to be done by the Master! The Midrash specified that foot-washing could not be required of a Hebrew slave.4 The Master dressed in a servant’s towel? Absurd! Never!
R. Kent Hughes
We have been cleansed once for all, but our feet still need to be washed from the defilement of our daily walk as children of God.
Charles Spurgeon
The real test of the saint is not preaching the gospel, but washing disciples’ feet, that is, doing the things that do not count in the actual estimate of men, but count everything in the estimate of God.
Oswald Chambers
The point is this. It was the custom that before people went to a feast they bathed themselves. When they came to the house of their host, they did not need to be bathed again; all they needed was to have their feet washed. The washing of the feet was the ceremony which preceded entry into the house where they were to be guests. It was what we might call the washing of entry into the house.
William Barclay
Why was the fountain filled with blood if you need no washing? Is Christ a superfluity? Oh, it cannot be.
Christ The End Of Law, Volume 22, Sermon #1325 - Romans 10:4
